msi k8n neo2 plat, x2, uad1.... solved (ish)

hi

this has been mentioned in akis's seperate thread, but i thought i'd post in this one to get it out in the open so to speak.

basically, i bought another uad-1 after selling my old one after it didn't work pre driver v4.0 on my asus a8v del.

the powercore mk2 didn't work on the asus either so i sold the asus and got an msi. the powercore mk2 works on this, but still doesn't work on the asus.

every time i use a uad-1 plug on the msi, i get extreme distortion/metallic sounding warbling which doesn't stop even after disabling the plug or removing it. only resetting the asio buffer (by changing latencies/driver/resetting cubase/computer) gets rid of it.

swapping cards around and pci latency tweaking doesn't help.

i've emailed ua, but until then....

any ideas?

:?

two bits of news....

1. ua emailed me back with a preliminary checklist to see what i have done and not done, setup wise. i've replied to this and while i was replying...

2. i changed the latency to 8192 and the noise dissappears!!! i had only tried up to 4096 before with no joy.

so its some good news for once from me!

obviously, i need to look into the lower latency thing as well but at least i can hear the sweet sounds of the uad-1 plugs whilst mixing again.

this is very interesting, I had the same sound out of my uads once when I installed a gigabit networkcard. The card was in slot 3 and the uads in 2 and 4. the funny thing was that it would only work with the uads in physically higher slots then the network. It´s now uads 1 and 2 and gigabit 4. there is some imbedded priority in the hardware from the mobo. BTW if I disabled the gigabit there was no problem. I´m not suggesting you should shuflle the cards, but it could be that one of the hardware components (IDE SATA or anything else that is constantly used) is having hardware priority over the slots.
Good luck and nice you have \"the\" sound back!

cheers for the reply secret world,

i was wondering if it could be sata, but i checked akis's specs and he has all ide.

i tried swapping cards around again, and now there are constant crackles even at 4192. i'll need to change them back round again.

oh well.

Have you tried an empty project no audiotracks just 1 vsti, that would completely eliminate ide/sata as a source.

Well, I couldn't live with 186ms of latency to start with, I use a lot of VSTi and mix as I go.

just tried it with one instance of fm7 with an eight bar loop.

no joy - distortion crops up after a few seconds here too.

so do i so i might rephrase the topic heading again to (slight improvement). :) it has been good being able to hear the plugs again, but even the delay between moving a knob and hearing an adjustment is a bit distracting.

i switched around the pci cards again and sx3 couldn't find my dongle, so i've had to reinstall it (well actually upgraded to 3.1.1) to fix it.

anyway to be honest i'm sick of all the hassle i've had from the start (and i even bought the initial box from a daw-builder). this trouble-shooting really is all-consuming and i think i may well just wait until tc electronic fix the driver for the asus a8v until i do anything else techie.

the creative side of my brain shuts down completely when i trouble shoot you see.

toodle pip.

I had a similar issue with the MSI, the Steinberg dongle and the UAD-1: each time I installed the UAD driver after switching slots, the dongle would have to be re-plugged and then I had to open the Syncrosoft License Center and re-scan for devices... :?
