[Music] I Want To Hold On To You... [12-29 Update]

[update]

Trying at least one of Scott's suggestions, I turn down the verb and remix for more open, drier sound...maybe too much bass now though.

Hi All,

Having exhausted the listens on two other forums (with my draft versions), I now bring this song here for some critical mix advice. I am learning a new set of monitors — ADAM A7s — and this is a much more complex mix than I usually do...the two are combining to cause some second-guessing on my part.

So what do you think? Any comments are welcome, but I am particularly curious about the low-end on this one, as I am trying to find the right balance.

UAD?

  • 1176s on the guitars and bass[/*:m:gyz6m1oq]
  • EX on the vocals (believe it or not)[/*:m:gyz6m1oq]
  • Helios on the drums & bass[/*:m:gyz6m1oq]
  • Fairchild on the Master Buss[/*:m:gyz6m1oq]
192 version at Broadjam

There's also a 320 version on my CloudStreetssite.

Hi Jeraz,
The low end didn't stand out to me one way or another, but the (opening) guitars are very out of phase--is that intentional?
You know, I was experimenting with that, and your reaction has given me my answer as to how it is going over...LOL...thanks for that!

I think I will correct and re-master.

Best,

Mark

Mark,
First things first.
You've got a great voice full of good stuff that needs to be heard. Pull off the Verb. I'd even pull up the bass or sing closer to the mic for a song like this. It might sound stupid, but I always love hearing some ones age and experience in their singing.

The snare hits seem a little off on fills.

How where the drums recorded? It almost sounds like groove agent. MIDI?
One thing I do know id that when the foundation is perfect (drums, bass guitars) the vocals are cake.

I think there is a ton of room to turn up the intimacy in the song (your lyrics seem to want that) and turn down the verb. Maybe tighten up the rhythm track or get a real drummer. Hope I haven't offended you, I hear a ton of raw goodness in this track that should come to fruition. IMO. Kind of like the lyrics. :)

LOL. No, you haven't offended me. This is exactly what I am looking for!!! Thanks very much. As the holiday winds up, I am going to go back in and try some of your suggestions.

The drums are MIDI, yes...and I am VERY inexperienced at them. This is the first time I have ever done a complete, final, drum track myself on ANYTHING. (I'm a guitar and vocal guy). I used Session drummer to generate a template...just so that I would have something to work with. Then I used Jamstix to keep me out of trouble with limb control...using the MIDI to drive their brush kit. Then I tweaked the MIDI until I confused myself, and then I froze the tracks and processed them.

I knew that I would have to go back in at some point, especially since I plan on buying some additional kit in terms of drum software, and/or hiring a live drummer to do that track...but figured I'd gotten it to at least demo quality.

Thanks for taking the time to listen and coach.
