My UA Lion Unboxing and high gain playthrough/testing vid - Product Feedback for UAD

I got my Lion this week. I decided to do a full unboxing and playthrough video showing my process of just poking at a new piece of gear to see what it can do.

I wasn't intending on it being as long of a video but I just totally lost track of time enjoying myself with the pedal :)

I did add chapter markers so you can jump to different sections.

I only do high gain modern rock stuff as that's what my band plays so this video is purely focusing on loud humbucker guitar high gain sounds.

I used to have a Ceriatone superlead clone that had Classic tone transformers, and was modded/upgraded by Kurt Granger from Granger amps.

While I know this will not replace hearing a huge loud amp in the room (since filming the video, I've run the Lion into the FX return of my Splawn and Jubilee and it sounds great but not the same), a big loud in the room sound isn't what I'm after. I gig with in ears and run a signal DI into the board and another to an FRFR behind me on stage so small and portable is the name of the game here.

I played my full show last night with the pedal board shown below and it RIPPED!

After spending quite a bit more time with it, mostly paired with the OX Stomp, I have some small suggestions that I'm hoping software can fix and that the UAD engineers will consider.

  • Add the ability to simulate the cascading gain mod that a lot of guys do to their amps (My old one included)
  • Give us the option in the app to have the preset switch toggle between two different favorite presets!! (The OX stomp does this and it's GREAT)
    • I feel like this is a no-brainer. I really would like the ability to fine tune a clean and high gain favorite and know, regardless if a cable or someone's foot or whatever messes with a knob on stage, I can quickly tap to get back to a stored preset.
    • Last night, I had a knob in live mode get tweaked and I didn't see which one (singer's mic cable got caught) and I was stuck for a minute after that song trying to dial it back in how I had it. It was needlessly frustrating.
  • If possible, it would be nice to still be able to use the room reverb even if the cab is disabled
  • Give us more reverb choices besides room
  • Give us a master EQ in the app to do post-knob tweaking EQ final touches
  • Give us the ability to run one output DI and the other output with speaker/cab simulation (again, the OX stomp does this and it's SUPER convenient)
    • If 4 cable method facilitates this, it needs to be more clearly communicated in the app.

You're not overreacting.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll pass it along.

Player over 40 checking in. Can confirm positive effects of magic potion. 🧪✨🦁

Although when I was 20, I think a cheap solid state Carvin amp was as best as I could do 😂
I used to lug around a Fender Twin amp that weighed over 60 pounds. The thought of lifting that beast into the trunk again makes me cringe.

When I was in my high school’s pop band in my sophomore year, I lived between 1/4 & 1/2 miles away and I used to carry, along with my books, my Seymour Duncan Covertable 100 combo to school and back each day, I’m sure that thing had to weigh 40 lbs easy.

My hernia these days would not allow such to happen, thank goodness for big sounds in small packages these days. I’ll have my Lion this Thursday!

Oh, I should have known that earlier. I don't know whether my health insurance will cover the costs of the Lion retrospectively.
