Neve 33609 field test (sound examples)

Wow! This thing is superb!!

I hadn't tried it on anything except 2-bus before tonight. But now I can truthfully say that this is my favourite UAD compressor. It does exactly that thing that I feel is lacking on the other emulations that to me, makes it sound analogue and real. The SE version doesn't sound as good as the full version, but I found that when used on separate tracks the difference isn't all that important anymore.

This is now my goto compressor for Overheads, Ambience, Vocals and drums except Kick most of the time since it tends to steal a bit too much low-end there. I just had to try it on a production I'm doing right now and felt I needed to share som Neve magic with the group.

It's used on the overheads, all the vocals and the snare drum on these two examples. We're tracking vocals right now so the production and mix is a mess.. but who cares when you have Neve on there!!

I tried it briefly myself today for the first time... first impressions are good. I like a lot of the presets.

I like it on drum groups mainly. If you're losing too much low end, try running it in parallel with uncompressed signal. I've yet to run into the low end loss on any of the compressors, but it's a good way to keep the transients and put the kit in a good space. Or you could send the kick on a buss to a sub synth to get the lowend where you want it.

I find that if you don't put the kick through the group drum mix, you end up losing it since the compressor is mostly going to hit on the kick/snare.

Thoughts ?

I don't hear the low-end loss either, so it must be something I'm doing differently. In any case, it doesn't kill the kick here.

But I can't say I like it \"mostly\" on drums, because it sounds so good on piano and acoustic guitar, and on some mixes. It sure isn't a panacea, but it's a versatile piece of kit, and I like it, like it, yes I do!

Hey Plec, the links to your sound files are broken already! Could you re-post them? THANKS!
