Neve Pre + Neve EQ Plugs... Doubly Neve?

Hey Hey!

Ok... So I guess another subject line option would be:

Neve EQ JUST adds EQ sound or also adds Pre Color?

I'm currently planning on a severe upgrade to my Preamps. I've got a few things to play with but have been considering buying a stereo pair of totally clean, transparent pres along the lines of the Millenia HV-3C, John Hardy, True, etc. I'd also like to get one channel of nice Tube or other more colored pre along the lines of a Neve.

Looking at the Brent Averill products I see that they've got the 1272 Pre which would equate to the preamp from the original 1073 and it's a lot less money than their 1073. Well anyway, that makes total sense to me with 4 UAD-1 cards and every plug, including the 1073 and 1081. (Now from what I understand that 1272 was originally not intended as a mic pre but as a line pre and the examples of it being used as a mic pre were with modification and the actual 1272 part of the 1073 relied on another gain stage in the unit but that's another thing and I'm assuming at this point that that's accounted for in the Averill design)

But then that makes me think, wait a sec., should I be just tracking with the transparent Pre and letting the 1073 plug provide the color? Or does that plug only provide the EQ's color and not the Pre? Now, I know that that first link in the chain that the mic sees (or that is listening directly to the mic) is critical but...

Well, I think you see where I'm going with this. If I use a Neve 1272 Pre and then insert a 1073 plug-in, am I going to have the color of going through two Neve Pres or just the color of the pre and the color of the EQ?

Thanks,
Archmart

The Neve EQ's do not model the preamp color, only the EQ.

Hey Hey!

Thanks.

Now if I decide I don't trust a straight up 1272 pre and go for the 1073 model, will I be introducing two layers of the Neve EQ sound (according to the idea that the EQ circuit -or modeled plugin thereof- colors the sound)?

Thanks,
Archmart

I've tracked with the Brent Averill 1073 and then mixed with the Neve plug-ins. I didn't hear anything like a \"double Neve sound\" problem. 8)

Maybe use a convolution of just a neve preamp then use the neve plugins...hmmm I might try that.
