Hey all, just wanted to introduce myself and give you my little \"uad1\" story.... and of course ask a question or two =).

I've actually gotten my first UAD card back in 05. I asked a buddy of mine about which plugins to buy... and he said UAD hands down. SO I research and buy the Project Pak. Ok, buy it, install it.. and basically never use it (or very little). I did ask him... since it supports more than 1 card per system... when should I get another card... He told me \"When you need another card.. you WILL KNOW!\" Ok, anyways... due to work, home, etc.. I never really got rolling with my music/DAW for a while. Fast forward to 2007....

UA releases the DVD... so I buy it.. since it looked like a useful bit. I had always thought my studio chops (mixing, etc) was always way behind my gtr chops... so I figured it to be useful. Well, I learned SO MUCH from that vid.. and some other info from the BFD mixing guide (I have BFD too).. on getting a good drum sound.... I began looking at more plugs!!!

Well, I created a dummy song/project just to apply some of my new knowledge from the BFD guide and the UA DVD... and guess what.... I needed another card... and this project had like 8 tracks or something only... well, since then I have bought SEVERAL plugins, and 2 more cards (including Flexi pak and a used Project pak from the friend mentioned above.. he's going PCI-e).

Well, I'm totally loving UA and defintely have been stocking up on plugs.. and I've only just begun my love affair with the Neve stuff =). But a recent project I was working on began giving me fits and kept crashing my pc with Cubase SX. I was running a slew of plugins (all UA) and maxing (or maybe 70%+ at least) my UAD's and the whole PC would lock up. I blamed it on Cubase mainly (with UAD though).. and began a hunt for a new DAW. I'm leaning towards Sonar with the new version 7 coming up.. though I'm also looking at Reaper... anyways here's my questions:

* are there \"workarounds\" for Sonar similar to the Cubase workarounds with the CPU load balancing by re-ordering the tracks to make the more cpu intense plugs load first. I haven't seen anything anywhere so I didn't know if one existed or not for Sonar

* on the UAD meter... I understand the cpu gauge, but what is the mem... mine usually is very low.. even when the cpu gauge is very high.

* UA dropped support with 4.7 for Win2000... is Windows Server 2003 still supported.. or just XP and Vista currently?

Thanks a million, now I just need to sit and wait for the next promo to spend my remaining UA funds =)

Peace

Before you change your DAW check for the IRQ settings of your cards, found in windows' device manager. Make sure the uad's share irqs with each other or if possible not with other highly frequented devices in your computer. Be sure to have the complete system optimized for audio. You can find many threads here concerning hardware/software relations, working setups etc.
In SX3, I can go up to 95% of 4 cards without getting in trouble. More discussion: http://www.chrismilne.com/uadforums/vie ... php?t=7472
The load balancing problem is independent of the host I guess.

mem = the internal memory of the uad's (raises when using delays/verbs)

strongly consider Reaper. I own it and Sonar. I will likely NOT be upgrading Sonar any longer.
