New tune \"Blue Serenade\" - critical comments please

Hi, I am new to this forum.

However, in addition to cubase.net, I've been following the discussions few times a week.

After suffering ear damage about 4 years ago I have not been doing much anything musical. Well, the itch came back and here's my first attempt after a long break, a blues kind of instrumental tune in 6/8 @ 55bpm.
Mostly UAD-1 plugs but SIR and Kjaerhusaudio freebies a featured too.

Did a guitarist mix this...

answer YES

I realize that the guitar is the focus and needs to be front and center, but it is just TOO LOUD, peel it back about -5 db atleast.

Beef up the drums and give them better separation.

Otherwise, excellent playing and solid arrangement skills

@bunker8: Ha ha, the answer is definitely yes...and I agree. So easy to lose objectivity when you do everything yourself. Thanks for the comments!

Hey edgehill, nice guitar playing. I agree that the guitar was too loud. I need to hear it again but I was wondering where the rhythm guitar was or whatever instrument playing rhythmic chords. I figure if the chords are strong enough within the groove, it gives the lead instrument more room so he doesnt have to take up so much space and can be more sparse. This is on the theory of satisfying your aducience with tasty leads but leaving them wanting more rather than over stuffed with guitar riffs.

I guess I look at it like a great meal. Those first bites are just like heaven. But, after your full and ready to burst, somehow the deliciousness escapes you as if your taste buds are overloaded and the thought of another forkful, the same forkful that nearly made you cream in your pants, now makes you want to pu ke.

Just some thoughts.

Hi Jeroleen! Sorry for the delay, I'd almost forgotten this thread...
And thanks for the comments!

What you describe is one of my many musical sins. I seem to be unable to leave stuff out, thus leaving no breathing space :( .

BTW, I made a new mix, don't know if it is any better though.

Nice sound. Yeah, the guitar's a bit loud.

My main niggle is that I find some of the drum fills just a -tad- busy. Not a lot, but there are one or two side stick fills that just seem like they were thrown in to see if we could fill up every last space. :D

For -me- space is the place.

Thanks for sharing!

It still is? Did you listen to BSW3.mp3?

In that respect, I did actually succeed very well, didn't I

Seems to me that the only way I could create any space in my music is to permanently stay away from the studio... ](*,)

Beautiful stuff. Reminds me a bit of elements of both Chet Atkins and Bill Frisell.

I don't mind the volume of the guitar relative to the rest of the instruments.

For me the keyboard pad kinda detract from an otherwise organic vibe - but that's a matter of taste.

You can play pretty busily without being overbearing - that's not easy!

Thanks for the listening.

Hello thread!

Thank you for the kind comments, Ben Logan & wavdoctor :D !

I needed those as...

...things seem a little bleak at the moment as I am (hopefully!) recovering from hand surgery. A tumor was removed a week ago from the backside of my left hand (base of thumb, near the wrist).

Anyway, next week I'll hear what kind of a tumor it was.
Preliminary diagnosis says: a giant cell tumor. A pretty horrible thing if you happen to look it up...

Only time will tell if I'll ever play again.
Exiting times indeed. :(

Ora
