Untill 1st april, this thread is gonna grow very fast I guess... without any usefull info in it! (since we do not have any confirmation, and UA will certainly not give any)So we are all waiting for Universal Audio to announce the UAD card for PCIe (possibly UAD-2??) After contacting them about my dissapointment and the lack of any sign of UAD for my new Quad, i have been advised to wait for an announcement at.....
MUSIKMESSE FRANKFURT
29th March - 1st April 2006
Universal Audio
Hall: 5.1 Walkway: A Stand: 50
6 Weeks to go - and I have a sneaky feeling this is when its going to happen.
Better late than never.
Rumor has it that the new UAD will be based on an upcoming 256bit DSP processor that is code-named \"Presto\". This DSP will run at 4GHz and will be highly optimized for floating point math. This new UAD will have 4 \"Presto\" DSP's and 128MB of memory.
A spokes person for UA said the new UAD should be able to run approximately 24 instances of the upcoming Roland Space Echo plugin. He went on to say that they decided to steer clear of PCI and Firewire, \"Those protocols aren't well suited for the new UAD, instead we decided to use photon beams. We'll be launching 200 thousand of the new UAD units into orbit June 2006, and our patent pending photon beam relay will sync-lock to an available unit for you to use in real-time. Beam Me Up!\" Come now guys... you know you believed it for just a second didn't you.
This is an exciting time to be a UA customer!
I always thought UAD plugs were developed on PC then ported to the UAD-1 after.Ninja said:I could be wrong (it has happened before), but I sincerely doubt UA will release a new dsp-card. More likely they will announce a plan at frankfurt messe; I guess something like a external firewire based shell for the uad-1 cards would not be too far fetched.
My guess is that Universal Audio is in abit of a pickle in terms of their uad-1 card... Releasing a new uad-2 card would probably mean a complete recode of their whole product line which could take forever to acomplish.

Sure. Did it for 15 years. And this ain't the bad old days. There are all manner of tools for porting stuff from one platform to another. I think the main issues are not technical, but rather -business-..mr chris said:have you ever programmed in assembler/ machine code???
Love it. LOL. That had me tickled.Suntower said:4. How do we price things so that we get the greatest number of us idi-- (er... devoted customers  ) to move to the new platform and thus get even more revenue without too much bitchen?

The coding will be done on a PC (due to lack of interface on the UAD-1  ), but whether or not they have a UAD-1 emulator to test it on I'm not sure. It would be quite time consuming to make, especially when they can just plug in a development version the card and test!electro77 said:I always thought UAD plugs were developed on PC then ported to the UAD-1 after.Ninja said:I could be wrong (it has happened before), but I sincerely doubt UA will release a new dsp-card. One thing you can gather from the occassional technical discussion posts by the UA folks is that Firewire and/or Network based interfaces are not an option they are likely to pursue any time soon. The bandwidth vs latency/overhead is just not as attractive as it is for PCIe(or whatever flavor of PCI(x)).Ninja said:I guess something like a external firewire based shell for the uad-1 cards would not be too far fetched.
