OSX 10.3.8 / UAD-1 / Logic 7 Pro = Stable or Not

hi everyone...

i am currently on a:

G4 Dual 1.25ghz Mac
OSX 10.3.8 Panther
Audiophile 2496 Sound Card
Logic 6 Pro (6.4.3)

All is working very stable so far.

however, i would like to make the upgrade to Logic Pro 7.

does anybody use Logic Pro 7 on OSX 10.3.8 with the UAD-1 Plugins?

Is it stable with UAD Plugs?

look forward to comments.

Works just fine. 7.0.1 hasn't crashed yet. And in my opinion this is PRO.

Hi Ashermusic,

I have two questions for you (and maybe James Cigler can step in on this).
I have Logic 7.0.1 and 10.3.8 and a Dual 2.0 G5.

1- What should the buffer setting in Logic be for the Ultra Pak to work correctly?

2- I am reading up on the PCI-X implementation of the card. Since the bus speed on the G5 defaults to the slowest item on the bus, isn't this going to drastically reduce the G5's speed and power?
Universal Audio's website says: \"the bus speed is determined by the slowest device on the bus, so assuming the system's PCI controller is working correctly, the fastest PCI-X/133 slot should behave exactly like a normal PCI/33 slot when a PCI/33 device is inserted\"

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Zidane

sorry...one more thing...

wouldn't this hamper the speed of firewire drives that ultimately tap into the bus speed?

or am i misunderstanding something here?

HELP :)

The optimal buffer setting depends on the audio card you are using. With my Layla 24 I use 256.

As for your second question I have not noticed a drastic reduction. My G5 seems to be handling everything just fine. The only downside is the much discussed fact that I can run fewer UAD plug-ins on the card than with my dual G4. But all is good here and frankly, I have never been happier than with my present setup.

BTW, for those of you in the L.A. area I will be teaching "Introduction to Logic Pro 7" at UCLA extension Monday evenings for 10 weeks starting April 4. (I hope it is ok to post this.)

Hi Zidane,
This is correct, the UAD-1 will cause the PCI bus to run at 33mhz/32bit, however, this will not slow down the memory bus or firewire/usb buses as they have their own buses and controllers. The only time this would come into affect is if you had a PCI card that had to run at 66mhz, in which case you can put it in slot 4, which would put it on it's own PCI bus (or the reverse). Most PCI cards are 33/32 as well, we haven't had any issues thus far with the UAD-1 slowing other PCI cards down and causing problems.

I'd generally recommend 512 as a average hardware buffer size and also a process buffer size of Medium (which is a setting unique to logic). Also in the UAD-1 Meter configuration menu, if you have any other PCI devices, I suggest a MIN_GNT setting of 64 if it is not set to that already, and you will want to have AMD-8131 mode enabled, which should also be the default setting for you.
