Ox: Constant Disconnects

Friends,

Merry Christmas.

I guess I'm one of the unlucky ones that get constant disconnects from the Ox. My ATT router has both 5g and 2.4g. I have a Deco expander system hooked in and managed to force the Deco to only use the 2.4 GHz wifi. The Ox paired with it, showed the software with faders and such, then started disconnecting. I also made a guest wifi network (which is only 2.4 GHz) with the same results. I moved the Deco right next to the Ox. Still can't find the Ox. I was able to update the firmware for the little time it did stay connected, so that is progress. But, not I get the dreaded "Unable to find your Ox" message. Hopefully I'm not one of the unlucky ones that can't get the Ox to be consistent or to work. I rebooted the router, but if that is the only solution when this happens, my wife is gonna divorce me since it impacts the TV too. Any pointers are welcome. I'd like to see what this thing can do.

Thanks,

Jed

Seems my IPAD can stay locked in to the internal Ox wifi. Is that a possible long term option? Sucks I will lose everything wifi on the iPad, but I can sacrifice that while using Ox if that is the only viable solution. I've reset this thing several times now. Seems it shouldn't be so difficult so definitely interested in hearing from members that have rock solid systems running and how they did it. I'm not a networking engineer and we have a lot of devices in this household such that it would be hard to sacrifice settings for only one device to operate properly.

You mentioned you have a lot of WiFi devices in the house…. Any security cameras that are on 2.4ghz? Those chew up a lot of air time. Ox is kind of sensitive to WiFi interruptions. I have an access point in the same room as ox and it’s solid for me. Using the iPad direct-connected may be less irritating for you in the long run since it just works. I don’t use the app that much these days, mainly the rig knob to switch what I want to use.

We have a Ring at the door. I'll have to see which device it connects to. I believe it works on the 2.4GHz but will have to look at the manual. So what you are saying is I can lose the iPad's ability to connect to the internet in lieu of a stable connect to the Ox via the Ox's own Wifi?

Thx Rodd.

Well, I'm saying if it works then that's kind of what you have to do. It's not ideal, but those that have wifi issues seem to have them and those that don't, don't. The 2.4GHz bands are so flooded with devices and for whatever reason Ox seems to be sensitive to it. You can try to contact UA support, but they're going to tell you to do a factory reset, change your router settings, etc., etc., which you may have already done. It's still worth doing it just to see if they suggest something you hadn't tried already, but in the end you have to decide if you can live with it this way or not. There's not a universal "fix" for it.

How many total devices do you have on your network, and how many concurrent connections does your router/modem support? If it's a dual-band router it may cap the total number of devices that can connect at any one time across both frequencies. For example, my router has a cap of 16 total devices. It doesn't matter if they're connected via 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz.

Also keep in mind that 2.4GHz is slow, less powerful, and doesn't penetrate things like walls/ceilings as well as 5GHz does. And as @rodd said, lots of older wireless things connect to 2.4GHz and/or cause interference with it.

I bought an OX just over a week ago and I haven't experienced any disconnection problems. However, after doing the initial setup/registration and firmware upgrade, I removed the OX's connection to my wifi network.

For the way that I use it, the OX doesn't need to be connected to the internet. I use my iPad to connect directly to OX's hotspot and control it with the app. I've created my own sets of presets and loaded the 6 I use the most into the OX's Rig slots so that I don't need a device at all most of the time when I'm using it.

I'm also using my Gigrig G3 to control 2 of the 4 effects on the OX via the footswitch controls. Eventually I may build my own 3-button footswitch so that I can control a third effect on the OX.

The thing sounds really good. Definitely happy with how the Ox sounds.

So, if I play with this network, does anyone know if I have Deco extenders set at 2.4 and connect my Ring to my 2.4/5 ghz ATT box (which the Deco plugs into), if that would change the way the bandwidth is used? Looks like 8 devices connected to the ATT router and 9 on the Deco extenders.

On a side note, Rodd, have you had any issues updating to Sonoma? I'm on the fence.

If you can force devices to use 5GHz and they connect reliably, I would do that. There are a lot more channels/frequencies in the 5GHz band, but as @GoldOnTheCeiling there are limitations. If you can free up the 2.4GHz frequencies that could help with Ox. Also, you can try different channels of 2.4GHz (trying not to get too far in the weeds, but look up 2.4GHz channel overlaps on the interwebs) to see if that helps. Depending on where you live, you may also be competing with your neighbors for 2.4GHz bandwidth, so it's not all within your control.

I haven't had any issues with Sonoma. Others on here have noted they have though, but it is a little tricky to install UAD software on Apple Silicon Macs (see here: https://help.uaudio.com/hc/en-us/ar...FT*MTcwMzYyMjAxNS41LjEuMTcwMzYyMjAyNy4wLjAuMA..)

Thx @rodd. I'm definitely not sure how to force devices to different bands and channels. I did something like that long ago and I remember getting frustrated. I'll do a net search on it. Maybe things have gotten easier. The iPad has not disconnected from the Ox in house wifi at all. I won't be able to use any controllers on the iPad with Ox running, but I can live with that.
