PCIe to PCI info for Magma users

HEy guys,

I thought I would let you know that Magma will be releasing their PCIe-PCI expansion host card next week. This will allow users of the old magma chassis's to upgrade their computer's motherboard.

Looks like some of us at least won't be forced into buying new PCIe versions of the UAD card!!! :D

I spoke with Magama a few weeks ago and they said it would be $300

-snip-

\"Thank you for your inquiry. I apologize for the delay in getting back with you.

We will be releasing a PCI Express host card that we work with your existing 13 Slot expansion system by the end of August. This price of the host card should be around $300.00.\"

I remember having seen something earlier about the new PCIe Host card only working with the newer round Magma cable, not the old flat one. To me it looks like the connectors on the cable types are different also. I just shot a mail to the company asking for some more info, will post when I get a reply. Maybe us with the oldest chassis are stuck with dinosaurs...

Anybody else have some facts on this?
-------------------- UPDATE ----------------------

Just saw a post in another thread confirming that it ONLY WORKS WITH THE ROUND CABLE. I'll leave this post here so ppl reading this thread also know.

Time to dump some cards and a chassis? I'm getting fed up with this. Analog has something going for it.....

Correct, the host card is $299.

The lady at the sales office said that it would work with the flat cable, not the round connector. I told her mine was flat and grey and she said that it would work.

You can call 800.285.8990 and ask for sales. They will be able to tell you if your chassis is compatable.

I really think she told you incorrectly. Magma doesn't even carry those cables anymore. You can also see from the photo of the card on the site that it is a smaller (vhdci) connector than that on the older cards. Just look at the size of the connector compared to the slot plate. Maybe some older chassis' can be upgraded with a new backplane card to use the new cable...?

Yeah - I've had lots of correspondance with magma and i'm told "the newer, round black cable is the right one to interface to the newPCIe host card. I'm sure I've read that the cable is like 68pin connector as found on some SCSI cables. The old grey flat ribbon 80pin cables are not compatible. I wonder if it is just a case of adapting the cable - I'm sure I've seen 80 to 68 pin blocks for use with SCSI wide - now there's something to look into  The only downside I can see is data "reflection" in the extra adaptor which would screw the data :?:

Keep this thread alive! ;)

I have an old \"flat cable\" Magma. I wish Magma supported the old cable or at least a way could be found to adapt the two connectors.

Thanks for your info.

hi, this may help others.
I emailed magma to ask them how can I identify systems that use the round cable required from sellers on ebay who are not selling the card and the cable.

\"However, in order to find out if the expansion system requires a older 80-pin flay, grey cable is to tell on the PCI Expansion interface (the card that goes inside the chassis), if this part number is PCIHIF68, that chassis uses the round, black cables, so you should be golden with that chassis.\"

I indeed got a confirmation from Magma that there is NO UPGRADE PATH whatsoever for the old chassis. The new uses a 68-pin connector (for the round cable), the old uses an 80-pin connector for the flat cable. Also, the chassis motherboard for the new, round cable WILL NOT FIT in an older chassis, according to them.

So .... we are STUCK with the PCI bus, until that too is dead. Sigh, analog REALLY has something going for it .... (unless... \"Your friendly power supplier is happy to inform you that with the new power scheme, 380V, which will be installed in two weeks time, you will be able to use thinner conductors for all your wiring. This will be a tremendous improvement, giving real benefits to YOU, our much valued customer. Incidently, your existing electrical and electronic equipment may need to be replaced ....)

Have a nice day.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to open the hood on it and see what card I have. Sorry for the confusion.
