Hi all,
I will be renting a music studio in about two months and because of that I thought it would be time to - heavily - upgrade my bedroom studio to equipment I’ve been looking at for quite some time.
My questions are based on my imagined setup with UA equipment mixed with external outboard gear. I want to get fully integrated with Console for tracking vocals and instruments, so I was thinking of buying the Apollo Twin X QUAD together with the Apollo x6 from the start. In addition, I found a good deal for a used analog 6176 Channel Strip (I know I can emulate it inside of Console with Unison, but I am so hooked on it and my desk have 3x3 rack units not being used). This setup would be paired with a Sphere DLX microphone, which is also causing me some concerns. Therefore:
1. I know the Twin X and x6 can be easily routed together, but if I throw in a 6176, would I have to change the cables every time or can I sort of bypass the two preamps (say if one day I wanna track vocals using the x6 going into the Twin X with Unison plugins, and the second day wanna track vocals using the 6176 going into the Twin X)?
2. The Sphere DLX comes with a split cable, so I will be out of mic inputs from the start. Will this be a problem, even though I’m only recording one vocal or one instrument at a time?
2.1. Will I even be able to use the 6176 with the Sphere DLX, due to the split cable, or would it require two of the same hardware EVEN though it would only be used on vocals and therefore mono recordings?
3. If I, in the future, would add more outboard gear (for instance a Neve 1073 preamp and a compressor of some sorts), how does the cable routing then go? Would I need to unplug the other preamps and route the two to the Twin X - and again, is that even possible with the split cable and the two mic inputs being used?
4. If I’m line levelling the Apollo Twin X and the 6176, can I still monitor and/or track with plugins in Console while using the external hardware? Say for instance auto-tune, reverb or EQ? As I understand it, Console needs the preamp from the Twin X (or x6) to work, which I then would disable by putting it to ‘LINE’. Or am I completely wrong?
I’m sorry for the many questions, but thank you so much in advance if you’re taking your time to read through it!
