Problem Solving: Registry Key for Disabling TurboDMA

Hi All,

I'm havng crazy CPU spikes in UAD 4.0 and I think that this may be the solution:

(TurboDMA) Most systems will experience increased or identical performance in version 4.0 with the new TurboDMA mode. Some systems may encounter new performance issues with version 4.0 such as higher host CPU load, dropouts, or glitches in disk rendering. In this scenario, the TurboDMA feature can be disabled with a special registry key provided by UA technical support which will revert performance back to version 3.9.0 levels under version 4.0

Does anyone have the reg key?

Thanks in advance,

Andrew

I think you have to e-mail them and they'll send it to you.

Probably this one.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Universal Audio\\Powered Plugins\\UAD HypTopo]

\"DmaMode\"=dword:00000000
\"DmaTurbo\"=dword:00000001

You could try and set it to 0 to disable.

Thanks -

I set it to 0 and so far so good with 4.0--

What are the reported benefits associated with TurboDMA mode? Also, what computer systems are most likely to benefit from the use of this mode? What computer systems are most likely to experience problems with this new mode? If you disable this new mode, what will you lose?

Thanks,

Dave

I requested the reg file and can confirm this, had no time to try it though. 4.0 would give me the ocasional crackle when using my pci/ata133 controler under heavy load. Hope this solves it.

I believe TurboDMA helps with dual processor systems.
I tried 4.0 on my A8V with a single AMD 3200+ system and it caused lots of problems (CPU spikes, system not being able to play back, etc.)
I got the registry patch and I'm back to good operation ala v3.9.
If you're seeing problems with 4.0 get the patch and try it!

I also applied the patch. For me there was a noticable improvement the host CPU demands that the UAD-1 placed on my system. I would agree that the UAD-1 is now operating as it did with version 3.9 and earlier here. The patch was well worth installing.

AndrewG, is your system HT enabled and your P4 a E version (Prescott)?
Here, with the same project the host CPU demands increase of 3-6% with the key value set=0! However I have no idea how that could be with the 3.9 drivers installed since I got the 9632 only few weeks ago. For now keeping the value as is (=1) seems to be fine until now...

Hi all,
I believe my problems with v4.0 and v4.1 are related to the TurboDMA issue. I've e-mailed UA support re: this but they are out until 1/2/06.

Would someone be so kind to post instructions so I can disable turboDMA? I am not well versed in this type of procedure and would truly appreciate some help so I can get going again. With the info in this thread, I was unable to figure it out myself, but I do make a great cup of coffee.

Thanks in advance for your help and Happy New Year!!!!! Especially UAD support, I believe you guys are gonna be busy when you get back in the office.

OK. Click Start, Run, type Regedit and hit Enter. In the left part of the window click the +'es at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SOFTWARE, Universal Audio, Powered Plugins, and click on the UAD HypTopo key. In the right part of the window double click DmaTurbo. Change 1 to 0 and click OK. Close program, restart computer - done.

Best wishes

Thanks to everyone for their help. I was able to change the registry with the patch. It however made no difference. I just can't run UAD-1 V4.1 on my system.

I'm getting now that Sonar 5 isn't supported by UAD-1 versions greater than 4.0. I don't understand why UA would do that.

You will need either native VST support, or else a VST to DX wrapper.
Does Sonar support VST plugins yet?

DX support was dropped from 4.1.....

Neil,
Yes I got that. Sonar versions 3 through 5 included a VST adapter/ VST native support, always has -

http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/SONAR/studio.asp

Note that Sonar 5 nor Cakewalk is not listed as a supported host system on UA's webpage for UAD-1 V4.1-
http://www.uaudio.com/support/software/UAD-1/hosts.html

BTW Neil, cool banner on your Opus website, I like how the mouse interacts with it!
Sonar 5 is listed as a Supported Host.

I use 4 UAD-1 cards with Sonar 5 and it works fine. Did you run the VST adapter to renumerate the plugins?

Would I have any issue installing latest drivers if I have been using the DX versions of pugs in all my old projects? Don't want to get VST plugs up and running if I then load a project that looks for DX versions ( that are no longer included/supported)?

Is this regedit needed for newer UAD drivers and SONAR 6 PE? I've been having some problems with the UAD/S6PE combo. check out this threads. I performed the Registry edit and nothing really changed.

I also started the same thread here on chrismiline.com forum.

I'd greatly appreciate any ideas.
thanx,
