Problem when adding insert effects to several tracks...

Hello,

I just bought the studio Pack last night and installed it and everything booted up with no problem. I have a 20 track song and I was adding the 1176N compression to my first 4 tracks and it worked great. Then when I went to add it to my 5th & 6th track, as soon as I inserted it the track started to crackle, slow down and sound terrible. So I choose a different effect and it did the same thing. Has anyone else had this problem? I would assume I could add compression on all of my tracks and depending on the instrument I could have different settings.

I really hope UAD is a reliable product. I purpously spent 700 bucks so I didnt have to deal with this kind of stuff. Can someone help me?

Thanks in advance

Hi David,

It'd help if you listed you PC specs and a little more about your system. Sequencer, OS, is it for audio only, that kind of stuff.. Here's a link from UA showing how many instances of each plug you should be able to run on one card..

http://www.uaudio.com/support/software/UAD/charts.html

Remember adding another card gives you more DSP power..

Also, instead of using one 1176LN for each track set up an FX track with the 1176LN as an insert, then use your individual track sends for similiar type tracks to send through the 1176LN on the FX buss.. Say you have 6 Background Vocal tracks.. Instead of using 6 1176LN's, use 1 on an FX buss and send the 6 vocals to it.. Or you could set up a Group Track for those BGV's, route the outputs of the BGV's to the Group and insert one 1176LN there..

You can also use the 1176SE which uses less DSP per instance..

Hope this helps!

Sid

I updated my profile to include my system information. Sorry about that!

Yea, I figured that I needed to set up FX channel sends and route several tracks to that effect. I guess I ddin't realize that the PCI card would get bogged down by using several instances. However, I am really new to PC recording so this is a learning experience for sure.

I have read where people add a 2nd card to their computer. Would this help my situation? The part where I am confused is that if I were to buy a 2nd card, I would have doubled up on some effects. So I wouldn't want to pay for the 1176n on the 2nd card as well would I ? Or, is there a way to by a \"blank\" card that the effects on my studio pack and my 1st card \"share the resoucces so to speak.

I also noticed that I do not have another availble card slot on my Dell PC mother baord. so is there a work around for that?

Sorry for the \"newbie\" questions. I apprecaite your help

Think of the Project Pack as the 'blank card'.. ALL cards come with the stock 5 plugs.. The plugs you own with the Studio pack will still be there and you don't have to buy new liscenses for them for a 2nd, 3rd or 4th card.. Once you authorize the next card the plug in instances will be spread across both cards!! Thereby doubling the number you can use in effect. That make sense?? So you have the Studio Pack card with it's compliment of plugs.. UA currently has a 4 card per system limit.. Take the 1176LN.. The chart says you can run 8 mono instances of it at 44.1 on 1 card.. if ya had 4 cards you could run in theory 32 instances!!

BUT!!! No more slots is a problem! The only real work around is to buy a PCI Expansion Chassis.. Couple brands to look for are Magma and SBS technologies.. Google them or check Ebay..

You'd take your UAD out of the PC and replace it with the Expansion Chassis Host Card.. Run a cable from it to the expansion unit and put your UAD in the expansion unit.. I have a 7 slot Magma.. 4 slots have UAD's and have 3 open just waiting for UA to lift the 4 card limit per system!!!

Does your PC have any PCIe slots open? UA just released the UAD-1e that goes in PCIe slots.. Just FYI..

I got it now.....thnaks for the insight.. :D I did check out the mamga site and their cheapiest chassis is $1300. Wow I can buy a whole new compter for that cash...lol

I think for now I am going to use the FX channel sends and route things that way. That should do it for me for now. I just invested $3500 into the PC recoding project and I need to hold off on any other \"extras\" for now.

I did check the UA meter and I can see that if I had the 1176n on 8 different channels as insert effects it uses 95% of the CPU usage. So I am thinking that becasue a lot of my tracks are \"doubled\" up for a BIGGER sound, especially drums and guiatrs, I can use 1 or 2 Send effects each one with the 1176n compressor with different settings and route my 4 gutiar tracks to one send and the drums to the other send. Then I will be using only 2 1176n's instead of 8.

I am sure that at one point down the road I may purchase a chassis extension but by that time I may upgrade the computer and purchase one with 2-3 PCI copen slots.

Anyway than you for the advice.
