PTLE and H/W Buffer Size

I'm a brand new UAD-1e user. Bought the Extreme PAK to have every plug-in at hand. What better way to have multiple instances of so many incredible plug-ins, right? And right off the bat it's obvious how much better UA's 1073 and 1176LN are than anything that came free with Digidesign's Factory or Music Product Kit bundles. Sorry Digi - you guys really need to embrace the UAD-1! First thing I learned though is I'm gonna be adding a second UAD-1e if I want to really indulge myself (and I do, heehee,... ...eh, heh.)

So let me hit y'all with my first technical issue. And maybe this is an old issue, but I googled this forum and found nothing. So, sorry if this has been covered.

If this is a host-based dsp, then why am I having to raise my H/W Buffer Size to get the UAD plug-ins to work? If I don't go up from 128, I get the \"OS held off interrupts for too long\" playback engine dialog (-9094). Even at 512 I still get it occassionally. I'm really hoping to be able to track with at least one live comfort reverb running on a stereo aux track, but anything above 128 samples is gonna produce too much latency.

Also, when I do receive the error, I have to restart PT to clear the problem. Even disabiling the UAD plug-ins doesn't work - I have to restart Pro Tools. So, that's annoying.

Other than that, things seem to be running okay for me so far as a UAD newbie, but I've only played with it for an hour. For the record, I'm running Pro Tools LE 7.1 with Digi002 under Windows XP Home on a Dell XPS400 with 3GHz Pentium D, 4GB RAM, Intel 945 chipset, and NVIDIA GeForce 7900GS graphics card.

Well, seems like PTLE and UAD aren't the best combination. I also got these errors from time to time. The workaround that works for me is to use PTLE 7.3 and check the new function \"Ignore errors during Playback/Record\". This can cause some crackles and pops, but at least you don't see this annoying \"OS held off interupts for too long\" message.

If you have the asio driver installed (for the 002) and you can get your hands on a cubase sx3 (wich also has full plugin delay compensation) (or even a cubase LE, wich hasn´t in V1 but does in V3) you could see if it is a system or a protools problem. I can keep my latency very low even with 2 uads almost maxed. I have worked with a 002 on a new mac (intel) and performance was ok afther we installed 2 gigs ram, 1 was totaly unusable.
Personally I use a cheap behringer dsp1000 for comfort reverb, wich ofcourse works even with 100ms latency, wich I use a lot when tracking vocals, cause it gives the least cpu strain (so no suprise clicks in a perfect take because I set the latency too low), I do need low latency when playing vsti´s life....
All the best

Thanks! I tracked some vocals last night and was able to run a single instance (and maybe more) of Plate 140 no problem. Buffer was at 128, which is as low as I can go even without plugs. So, that's pleasing.

Other than that, I don't think the UAD plugs are behaving any differently than using a lot of native plugs. That is, I have to raise the H/W buffer size either way. I just thought maybe it would be different using a host dsp. Guess not.

So really, I think my PTLE/UAD combination is reasonably syccessful so far. Fingers crossed. I won't get into heavy mixing for a few weeks though.

I will say, I don't find the manual delay compensation all that difficult. Just takes a little basic math and a logical mind.
