PTLE Users - Help Required re Delay Comp :)

Ok so, ive just got PTLE 6.9.2cs4.

Im still using SX3, which I love, but for compatability Ive now also got PTLE.

So SX3 has full PDC.
PTLE does not.

I have inserted 2 separate DelayComp plugins onto every audio track in my template. Fine so far.

My mix template contains 6 MASTER OUTPUT CHANNELS for stems:

- DRUMS
- BASS
- SOUNDS
- LEAD VOX
- BACK VOX
- FX

It also contains 4 SUBMIX (Aux Input) channels:

- DRUMS SUBMIX (routed to DRUMS MASTER)
- SOUNDS SUBMIX (routed to SOUNDS MASTER)
- LEAD VOX SUBMIX (routed to LEAD VOX MASTER)
- BACK VOX SUBMIX (routed to BACK VOX MASTER)

It also contains 4 FX RETURN (Aux Input) channels:

- DRUM VERB (routed to DRUMS MASTER)
- MAIN VERB (routed to FX MASTER)
- VOCAL DELAY (routed to FX MASTER)
- OTHER DELAY (routed to FX MASTER)

Almost all audio channels are routed to a SUBMIX.
The exception is the bass track - this goes straight to the BASS MASTEER OUTPUT.

Do I need to put DelayComp plugs on any of the SUBMIX channels?
What about the MAIN STEM OUTPUTS ?

Any advice greatly appreciated !

Thanks,

Ben

you have to delay only the tracks without uad plugins or with less plugins
than the max number on uad plugs you've got on a single track.

ok...a little exemple

here are your tracks with plugin (uad or non uad):

- DRUMS > uad eq + uad comp
- BASS > uad eq + uad comp
- SOUNDS > non-uad eq
- LEAD VOX > uad eq + uad comp
- BACK VOX > uad eq + uad comp
- FX > uad delay + non uad flager

you have use dealy comp in this way:
as you can see you don't have more than 2 uad plugin per track
you have to put a delay only on traks wich have less than 2 uad plugins

- DRUMS > uad eq + uad comp
- BASS > uad eq + uad comp
- SOUNDS > non-uad eq + DELAY COMP (set to 2)
- LEAD VOX > uad eq + uad comp
- BACK VOX > uad eq + uad comp
- FX > uad delay + non uad flager + DELAY COMP (set to 1)

the \"math\" is simple. for each track you have to solve this equation
to find the delay compensator value

Max Uad plugins used in 1 track - number of uad plugins in actual track = delay compensator value

if delay compensator value = 0 than, no compensatro is needed.

let's go on.

if you have UAD plugins on submixes or fx-returns you have to play
the same \"math-game\" within fx-returns and submixes.

in your example, if you put a UAD plugin in one of the following traks
you have to compensate all the others.

let say you have a 1176 on drum submix and 2 Plate reverbs reverb fx-returns, you have to compensate in this way...

- DRUMS SUBMIX (routed to DRUMS MASTER) > 1176
- SOUNDS SUBMIX (routed to SOUNDS MASTER) > DELAY COMP (1)
- LEAD VOX SUBMIX (routed to LEAD VOX MASTER) > DELAY COMP (1)
- BACK VOX SUBMIX (routed to BACK VOX MASTER) > DELAY COMP (1)

- DRUM VERB (routed to DRUMS MASTER) > PLATE
- MAIN VERB (routed to FX MASTER) > PLATE
- VOCAL DELAY (routed to FX MASTER) > DELAY COMP (1)
- OTHER DELAY (routed to FX MASTER) > DELAY COMP (1)

I think it's all.
I hope my english is enough clear :)

I can't guarantee my answer is math errors free ;)

ta mate, yeah I got it working thanks. :)

I knew how to use the delayComp, but just didnt know if I would also ned it on bus submixes and masters.

interestingly UA recommend using 2 instances of the plug, each set to one, rather than a single instance set to 2.

Using the UAD-1 Delay Comp plug-in
It is recommended to use individual Delay Comp plugs instead of changing the value of one Delay Comp to a value of 2 when using 2 UAD-1 plugs. This is because of the extra buffer of delay added from the FXpansion adapter. (Please see the UAD-1 manual for more information regarding the use of Delay Comp plugs).
from:

http://uaudio.com/webzine/2004/may/index5.html

but dont we want to minimise that extra buffer delay ?

wow!
you've been able to translate my instructions in real english :)!

i'm happy everything works fine :)

about the number of delay comp instances as far as i remeber,
the advise to use 2 delay comp was made because of a problem with
the vst-rats converter, problem that has been solved.
it's an old information :)

somewhere in the webzine (or in the UA website) is written that
now we can use one compensator per track.

have a good music ;)

I am getting ready to do some tracking and mixing in Protools LE 6.9.
This delay comp stuff is something I need t get used to. The project started in Logic 7.1. Now the guitar work will be done in Protools.
Thanks for the info. It really helps out.

Rich
