Recording MIDI created from a MIDI FX (e.g. ARP) to another MIDI track

I'm new to LUNA and really enjoying it's clean and logical layout. But I'm wonder if it's possible to record MIDI output created from a MIDI FX (e.g. ARP or a third party MIDI effect) to another MIDI track? This would allow me to modify the MIDI once it's been created.

Yeah you can create a new midi track and copy and paste it, is that what you mean?

No, I mean take the MIDI notes that are created by a MIDI effect (simple example: ARP) and write them to a new MIDI track.
Some DAW's (e.g. Live) allow you to do that.

Sorry, I don't understand. I think you are talking about the UA ARP VI, in which case it writes its output to a midi track already. Are you trying to create a 2nd copy at the same time? That's not possible. Another option (apart from copy/paste into a new track) is to use the "duplicate version" on the same track. This will create a copy of the current version into a 2nd one that you can edit with impunity, preserving the original.

I was thinking that you could setup the output of the first midi instrument to feed the input of the next track input and just arm it and record the result? do this with the midi i/o per track.

ie track 1 has a simple midi note pattern with the arp plugin on the end of the instrument chain. set the midi output to track 2’s midi input..arm instrument/midi track 2 and record. it should play track one and record the midi fx with the added notes to track 2. hope that helps!

You can using the IAC bus which can be activated and configured in the Audio MIDI Setup app on your mac.

Open an instrument track and add the midi fx you want to record, set midi out to IAC bus.
Open a second instrument track with the sound you want to use and midi in set to IAC bus. Hit record on this track and you will record the output midi from the midifx

Thanks for understanding what I'm attempting to do, Rainflower. However, I haven't been able to find a way to feed the MIDI output from one Instrument track to another. The MIDI IN options available on Instrument track 2 don't seem to include output from another MIDI Instrument track. I can choose "All" for track 2's MIDI IN, but that doesn't "feed" the track MIDI notes. I am able to this using Live as shown in my attached example.

Abu,

Your approach sounds promising, but I haven't been able to get it to work yet. I'm using an M1 chipped iMac running the latest Sonoma 14.4.1. I just found the IAC Driver setup on my Mac, and I'll see what I can do with that. Ultimately, I'd like to use Reason's MIDI Players to feed into Luna's MIDI instrument tracks.

Thanks,
D.P.

Rainflower,
I am trying to do the same thing in LUNA as I did in Live, record MIDI Effect modified MIDI into a second track. But I don't see the first "MIDI OUT track" as an available input into the second "MIDI IN Track" in LUNA. If you can do this, please show me how and maybe share a LUNA project with me.

Abu stated it could be done using an IAC Bus, so I'll try that.

Thanks,
D.P.

Abu,

I don't seem to be able to set the first MIDI out track 1 to see and use the IAC Driver BUS 1 as MIDI output.
I can set the second MIDI In track 2 to use IAC Driver BUS 1 as the MIDI input. However, track 2 isn't receiving MIDI notes from the IAC Driver BUS or Track 1 in any other way.

I'm admittedly new to both LUNA and IAC MIDI Bus configuration. A working example would be helpful if someone could provide it.

My ultimate goal is to be able to use MIDI effects in LUNA from other vendors (e.g. Modalics or Reason) to modify and output MIDI notes to a second track. If this isn't possible, I have work arounds, but I wanted to see if it's possible within the LUNA DAW itself.

Thanks,
DP

I was trying this now in luna. it is working best using the iac midi i/o.
it was pretty straight forward.

create an instrument track. i used the revel piano. add the ARP plugin to the midi fx. set the midi out to iac 1.
create another instrument track. add revel. set the midi input to iac 1.
add a few notes to track 1
arm track 2 and press record
luna will record the midi with the ARP notes onto track 2.

if you don’t have the iac midi buss available in luna, you will need to go into AMS (audio midi setup) on the mac and enable the aic bus in the midi window.

Beautiful Rainflower, that worked perfect. Somehow, I missed seeing an IAC Driver Bus 1 available as a MIDI IN on the second track.
One more reason to like LUNA, thanks!
