You are bidding on a Pentium 4 system, used only by me in my smoke-free recording studio. It was custom built for silence and reliability, and upgraded many times since I started on it three years ago. The CPU and cooler, motherboard, DVD+/-RW, and wireless keyboard/mouse are the most recent upgrades, dating back to last November. The majority of the components are less than a year old.
I chose the Lian Li PC-60S case because it was highly rated, all aluminum, and easy to work with (okay, and easy on the eyes). The Zalman CPU cooler has a fan control dial that I've set at a very slow speed, making it inaudible. The fan on the Antec TruePower 430 power supply is supposed to ramp up when it gets hot, but I've never heard that happen. The power supply also controls the speed of two Panaflo 80mm fans - one at the rear and one at the top of the case. Two Panaflo 80mm fans in the front are connected to a front panel speed switch, which I always keep on low. I've never had any heat problems. Last but not least, the two Seagate Barracuda 80 GB drives were the absolute quietest on the market at the time of purchase. The IDE cables are all sleeved to control clutter and improve airflow. A lot of thought and effort was put into selecting the right components, and the result is a virtually silent computer. It would be very hard to create graceful fade-outs with fans buzzing in the background!
The motherboard and CPU were chosen for maximum stability and performance with current pro audio apps. I went with the Intel D850EMV2L mobo because I didn't want to take any chances with compatibility. The 3.06 GHz HT Pentium 4 runs on a 533 MHz Front Side Bus with PC1066 RDRAM, which is the fastest possible configuration supported by the mobo (it can accept up to 2 GB of RAM though). The mobo features an onboard LAN controller, USB 2.0, and SoundMAX audio. If you are looking to play 3D games on this computer, you'll probably want to buy a beefier graphics card. I chose the Radeon 9200SE because it's stable and passively cooled.
Rounding out the package, the Samsung 170T is a great 17\" LCD monitor that operates at a native resolution of 1280x1024. I chose it because it got great reviews, it has a quick pixel refresh rate (in case I wanted to play games), and I confess, because it matched the Lian Li case. The Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop is the latest version, with the cozy faux leather wrist rest. The mouse has never been used, because I prefer a touchpad. There's even a floppy drive in there for all your old school needs.
I wiped the drives, and as of right now, there is no operating system installed. For an extra $100 above the auction closing price, I'd be happy to run to Fry's, buy a genuine copy of XP Home SP2 on your behalf, and configure the system for you with all the latest drivers. I'm using my current copy of XP on my new system, a dual core Athlon FX X2 4200+ (not that you asked
).
