Right-Hemisphere Love Song

The song is called Violet Moons

This song was a pain in the ass to mix and master. The strings and questionable vocals really gave me the most trouble. I also had low end issues that just didn't want to stay where they belonged. I recorded this waay back in January, but never really finished it. I decided to give it a new mix and add a few back up parts.

So that's that. Let me know what you think about the mix (or anything else) --- Also, if anyone here has any general advice about mixing strings / synth type sounds it would be well taken. There's also a rhodes in there and a couple of synths during the chorus. I have issues mixing sounds like this. Any advice would be cool?

Thanks,

Toy

no immediate complaints about the mixing here.

--well maybe the tambourine sounds a bit thin, let it take up some more frequency space as in a tad more mid. i don't know how much the audio format steals from your original treble settings but the strings wouldn't suffer from just a little more 10-15 khz.

maybe the harmony vox seems a few inces too high as well BUT:

on the other hand the low end sounds just fine! maybe not sub-power-deep but i don't think that's what you were after, the kick and bass sounds defined and smooth. at least in my koss phones.

good song, good performance, good production as usual
and remember,
strings in this kind of music can be eq'ed pretty much in any given way, they don't have to sound exactly like \"seat 15 in the sydney opera house\".
in your kind of music the strings provide long notes and a sense of atmosphere.
therefore don't be afraid to eq them away from the guitars and/or other sound elements.

good solid work toystein!
btw i just bought \"steve miller band greatest hits\" again since my 1st copy got stolen back in '93.
pfew, now that's some sweet singing/songs!! highly recommended!

thanks sniper - I agree with you on the strings, I did put the UAD phaser on top of them and put a heavy eq curve on them I should have swept them more. They just didn't sit well. It's funny you mention the tamborines, I kind of killed them a little when mastering. I wanted them to sit well with the snare and other parts. They are louder in the mix and yes the MP3 does get rid some of them slightly.

thank you for the advice and comments, I appretiate it!

Although I've never delved into any of his CD's, I've alwyas liked Steve Miller. His tunes have always made me sit up and take notice. I had a girlfriend once that used to play "The Joker" over and over again. Damn she was a cutie, drove a little white mustang. Blonde...

oops getting a little off topic.

Got to it now . Seems to be a tad bass heavy on my system I don't know if it's the encoding or not . It I get a chance I will try on one of my other systems . By rolling a tad off the bass end everything sounded great ( This is what leads me to think it's the encoding )
