Hi, I'm considering going the expansion chassis way; Aside the magma, there's also the SBS chassis. Do these work well with UAD cards?
Thanks!

HI,

There has been much discussion here about this and you could probably locate a lot of info with a search on the topic.

To quickly throw in here though... to be on the safe side I'd recommend going with the Magma brand as this seems to have seen much closer to Universal success here.

Having said that.. I have a Pro Tools branded SBS chassis myself that has been working fine for me with 2 X UAD-1 plus 2 X Powercore.

I bought it used and with the original power supply that came with the unit it wasn't being recognized at boot up. I replaced the power supply with a better (and quiter) unit and also replaced the 2 stock fans in the chassis with one large and much quiter one and it's worked fine since.

I should also add though that I have tried an older SBS chassis that never worked properly and I gave up on it as a lost cause. It would \"work\" but only with unaccepable loading on the system with more than one card in it (which of course defeats the purpose).

Your milage of course might vary and again.. all things being equal... I'd say go with the Magma. :)

Hope this helps,

Magma just announced Expresscard->PCI for laptops

Mobility Electronics, Inc. is pleased to announce the availability of the first Magma ExpressCard to PCI Expansion System for laptop computers. The new Magma expansion chassis provides an easy solution for adding PCI cards to laptop computers through the 54mm ExpressCard slot appearing on many new PC Laptop computers.

ExpressCard to PCI Expansion - 2x Faster
With Magma PCI Expansion Systems you can add one, two, or four PCI slots to your laptop computer. Now you can use PCI cards, typically installed in a desktop computer, with your laptop computer. Practically any type of PCI card can be used in the Magma expansion chassis ranging from audio processing, video capture, graphics, test & measurement, data-acquisition, SCSI, FibreChannel, SATA and more.

The new Magma expansion chassis connects to the laptop through an ExpressCard/54 module. Based on new PCI Express® technology, ExpressCard is a new and improved version of CardBus (or PCMCIA) providing a theoretical maximum throughput of 250MB/sec each direction. Connection through ExpressCard provides bandwidth almost two times the speed we experience with legacy PCI expansion technology. This means that legacy PCI cards will run faster with ExpressCard-to-PCI when compared to CardBus-to-PCI Expansion.

Easy Upgrade – Order Today!
If you already own a Magma product the upgrade to ExpressCard is easy. Simply buy the Magma ExpressCard/54 module (Model EC54) for only $299. The Magma EC54 connects to the same cable included with previous generation Magma expansion chassis.

A friend of mine just got a 7 slot SBS model 2132 and I was over at his place as he was setting it up.. Bought used and came with the Host card, Cable, power cord and the manual.. No software but that didn't surprise me as I have the Magma 7 slot model and it didn;t need any drivers or software.. Well, apparently this one does.. The Win New Hardware Wiz opens and see's a \"PCI Device\" and told it to find the drivers. Well, XP did'nt find them, wanted to connect to the net to search but since his PC is not net connected, we clicked out of that and were left scratching our heads.. XP Pro, SP2 on an AMD X2 4400. Aside from the graphics card and the SBS host card nothing else was in the PC and no UAD's were loaded in the SBS case yet.. Does anyone know where one could find the XP driver needed to configure this one? I have tried searching - nothing driver-wise found at SBS and I honestly don't know what to search for at MS.. One note.. this SBS chassis came out of a working MAC system.. but they are interchangable between Win and MAC, right? Thanks Much- Sid
