Shure KSM 27 or AT 4040?

Hey Hey!

I've got a friend asking advice on which of these mics to purchase. I don't have direct experience with either and reviews I've read seem not to prefer one over the other. Has anyone here a preference between these?

I know we're not talking the cream of the crop here, but if that's all he's got to spend, what do you think?

I own and use an AT 4060 almost everyday at my studio. It's not the 4040 so I can't vouch for it sounding the same. I love the Audio Technica mics. Very well made and the sound great. I don't have any experience with the KSM 27 but a buddy of mine uses one and really likes it.

I know that is a vauge response but I hope it helps.

hi. i have AT4040's and a shure KSM32. i don't know how different the KSM32 is from the 27, but comparing the 32 to the 4040's i noticed that the 32 can handle louder signals, pops and plosives, better. also, it sounds more \"open\" than the 4040's. if the 27 is the same as the 32 minus the roll off and the pad, then i'd go with the KSM27, specially for vocals. i use the 4040's as drum overheads. they sound clean and focused thru an aphex1100 mic pre.
