Can someone tell me what the purpose of sidechaining is and if its possible to do this with the UAD plugins and how to do it? I know its a lot of questions but thanks in advance :p

Well...

Sidechaining is making a device function in a respond to another device.
For example, A compressor that offers a sidechain facillity could be triggered by some other audio track (other than the one it compresses).
A common use of this situation is compressing a rhythm guitar while
the compressor is sidechained to the kick drum. That way the compressor will press harder anytime a kick hits. (hence creating kind of \"holes\" in the guitar track making room for the kick).

Another good example is sidechaining a gate to respond to something rhythmic (i.e a string goes through a gate whose sidechained to a hihat making a rhythm pattern. the gate will open when the hihat hits letting the string out hence creating a sliced string sound. A mustknow trick if you're into house/trance tracks).

I don't remember any uad plugin offering sidechain.

well.. i talked to PC tech support the other day and they unfortunately told me that they didn't have plans to implement and support for sidechain support any time in the near future. I guess I'm going to have to look at other alternatives. But at least they did say that if they did ever implement it, they would have it as a new feature in existing plugin upgrade. But who knows when or if that'll ever be... :(

It's really a shame that UA doesn't plan to implement side-chaining eventually. I understand that it would be difficult, perhaps even impossible, to do with the component modeled plug-ins like the LA-2A & 1176LN but it would be nice to see them come up with some new amalgamation capturing some of the sound with the extra functionality. Internal side-chaining would be very welcome, too.

The Fairchild sidechain is a model of a mod that engineers used to do to turn the Fairchild into a true stereo compressor, by connecting 2 together. In the plug we just get 1 \"stereo\" compressor, that never actually existed..

In a sense the model sidechain is 'hardwired' into this stereo setup.
