Sleep issue Mac Pro UAD-1e

I'm on day one with my UAD-1e and I discovered a sleep irregularity: When putting the Mac Pro to sleep with the UAD-1e card, the firewire and USB buses do not power down. It's a minor inconvenience, but an inconvenience nonetheless.

Has anyone else encountered this or have a solution?

Thank you,
Noah

Sleep

I had the same issue with my new UAD-e card.If you go to Mac preferences and then to Energy Saver you`ll have to set the hard drive never to sleep but you can set the monitor to sleep seperately.I hope they work out this bug.I came downstairs and my G5 was blasting the fan as fast as it could go...

It's my understanding that its always best to turn off the nap function when using any digital audio program.

An interesting side note: When I boot my Mac Pro in Windows XP, it sleeps perfectly.

I've had sleep issues with PCI cards on previous Macs. I suspect there's little U-Audio can do about this. It's going to have to come from Apple.

I think he means when he manually puts it to sleep? (like during a long break or at the end of the day) For years now, macs have been designed with the intention that most users will just put their computer to sleep, rather than shutting off and rebooting every day. (Saves energy and the mac jumps to life at the touch of a key!)

Hopefully, UA can get Apple to lend a hand. If the Mac Pro will sleep in XP, then it's gotta be a software or driver issue.

Anyway, it's a major deal for me as I need to sleep my computer several times during the work day. Fortunately, my current G5 works unload the UAD driver and sleep, but I probably won't upgrade my UAD card when I get a Mac Pro if sleep issues persist. I'd miss those UA plugs for sure, but I'm not patient enough to reboot my computer half a dozen times or so every day!

It sleeps and wakes from sleep fine. It just doesn't fully power down the Firewire or USB busses.

And it takes about 15 seconds for the Mac Pro to boot up. It will blow your mind!

It goes into deep sleep (no fans, power light pulses) but doesn't power down the busses? I would take out the card and double-check it's not a new problem or behavior with that machine first.

What are you powering on those busses? Hard drives? Do the drives not have their own AC power? Doesn't the USB bus need some power so input devices can wake the machine from sleep, though?

The computer was sleeping just fine before I put the UAD-1e in. It's in deep sleep for sure, minus the power to the busses.

I have two interfaces that are powered by the Firewire and USB busses respectively, a Focusrite Saffire and a Line6 TonePort. In sleep mode, the Focusrite goes into \"low power mode\" instead of full off, like it used to, and the TonePort stays lit up.

Sounds like an Apple issue (which UA should report).

What happens if you use regular AC power for those devices and then put the computer to sleep?

Upon further examination, I can tell you that my Mac Pro tower does not go into deep sleep at all. The fans still run, the busses are still powered - just the monitor and hard drives are spun down.

I didn't realize this was the case because the fans are so ridiculously quiet on this thing. I had to put my head to the case to hear them!

Also, I tried the U-Audio Driver Utility that comes with 4.4.2 and unloaded the driver before sleeping however it still does not enter deep sleep. There is no sleep with the UAD-1e in the Mac Pro.

That stinks. (though near-silent fans are nice) I'd try over at the Apple forums and find out if the Mac Pro will deep sleep with any PCIe cards in it. Unfortunately it sounds like there's nothing else to do except hope UA and Apple will address the issue. Report the issue - email or phone is best.

Has this problem been resolved with the last Apple Intel Mac Pro firmware update or the OSX 10.4.8 update?

I've never bothered sleeping my Mac. Even before I put in any UAD-1 hardware I always had problems if I left audio projects open and then allowed the Mac to sleep.

Now I just leave it on all day (turning it off overnight). I have the Mac set to sleep the monitor only after 15 minutes. If you're worried about in-place security or confidentiality you can always click the \"Show Status in Menu Bar\" checkbox in Keychain Acess preferences, then select \"Lock Screen\" from the menu that appears.

Now no one can do anything with your Mac or see your desktop until you enter the admin password to unlock the screen.

Works for me...

Kind regards.

Dave,

Thank you for your comments.

However, I prefer to leave my Mac on all the time and put it to sleep when it is not in use. The Mac Pro only requires 7 watts of power when it is deep sleepiing.

The less frequently one starts up a power supply and other computer components the longer they will last. Therefore, I hope that there is a solution to this problem that has been found or that one is in the works.

Anyone have any more to report?

Thanks,

Dave

As a resolution you could disenable them and put your Mac to sleep. On rewaking it just reenable them. A pain in the ass, I know but it saves you running it or reapplying settings.

Do you mean disable the drivers for the UAD? I tried that and it didn't make a difference.

I think I may have had some MIDI issues with waking from [not deep] sleep. I've had to restart to restore MIDI in Logic and Reason.

I'm getting okay with just leaving my computer on all day.
