• Welcome to the General Discussion forum for UAD users!

Please note that this forum is user-run, although we're thrilled to have so much contribution from Drew, Will, and other UA folks!

Feel free to discuss both UAD and non-UAD related subjects!

    1) Please do not post technical issues here. Please use our UAD Support Forums instead.

    2) Please do not post complaints here. Use the Unrest Forum instead. They have no place in the the General Discussion forum.

Threads posted in the wrong forum will be moved, so if you don't see your thread here anymore, please look in the correct forum.

    Lastly, please be respectful.

Someone PLEASE educate me on how to use a Plugin within LPX that works as well as my preferred method of using UAD ones in the Console.

Many Members keep telling me that they use their Plugins within their DAW (LPX in my case) just as effectively/easily as the way I do now by using UAD Plugins within the Console.

But Jerry, what is YOUR way you might ask? :)

I'm recording Guitar Tracks in LPX, but before I record a track (or even launch LPX), I'm use my Apollo's Console as my Reverb, Delay, EQ, Compressor and Chorus "Pedalboard" to play along with my original Songs I have constructed on my Yamaha MOTIF XF.

Once I'm ready to record my Songs, I'll launch LPX, and I'll use the Console to let me Monitor the chosen Effects, but not burn them to the track, which in MY Case ain't a good idea should I say "I shouldn't have used that Delay for this Song, but it's too late now" :)

Within the Console, if I want to hear more Reverb, I simply pull the Fader up on Aux 1, and if I want to hear less Delay, I pull the Fader down on Aux 2, and I usually use the API Vision Channel Strip Legacy in the Unison Slot, and put the Compressor and EQ (but not always the EQ) in the Inserts

So someone please educate me on how I can Monitor the same Plugins within LPX instead of through the Console as I'm doing.

Many thanks in advance!
Jerry

You can only do this with super low buffer settings inside the DAW (entirely production dependent and computer dependent).

The entire reason Console exists is because inside DAWs, CPU management is inherently terrible .. so you can run plugins outside the DAW in Console with different buffer access.

Hi JN!

Not to put words in your mouth, but perhaps ONE of the reasons SOME prefer to work within the DAW is because you can use other Plugins besides UAD ones, which due to the proprietary nature of the Console, you can't use them.

Do you believe that using Console Plugins sounds better than using them in the DAW with super low buffer settings?

There is no difference in the sound of the UAD plugins inside of Console or LPX. No difference.

Whether you can get your particular machine down to a low enough buffer to track with those plugins inside of LPX (instead of Console) is another story. Personally, I have a pretty powerful studio machine and I definitely cannot get as low of latency for the UAD plugins (while tracking) as Console gets. That's the entire reason Console exists. And the more hefty the LPX project gets, the higher you'd have to set the LPX buffer if you used it that way - yet there would be no change for Console.

But to reiterate, there is no difference in sound for the UAD plugins inside of Console vs LPX.

Yep it's not really possible - especially once the production gets going and you start running plugins in the mix.

The UAD plugins sound the same (of course) whether you use them inside the DAW or not.

That's why the UAD platform is so unique & good - you can track with the UAD plugins no matter how many plugins you're running in your DAW and what the buffer is (mine pretty much sits at 2048).

Any other plugins you run inside the DAW when attempting to monitor you'll run into the same issues - your sample rate will need to be like 32/64 samples and DAW CPU management just can't handle that for any project size other than tiny ones.

I’m pretty much in agreement with the others in that anything I’m going to use while recording is pretty much done in console, not only for latency reasons, but also for the fact that I will print the effects. Most of mine are for the most part a channel strip, compressor, EQ and tape. As far as guitars go, echos and reverbs are pretty much done by my Helix and I’m playing them as part of the instrument.

I would rather have Console do the heavy lifting because I am often using software instruments that won’t handle a 32/64 sample buffer. I also prefer to get things right at the recording phase, rather than fix it in the mix.

One thing you need to remember is any plug-ins in the unison slot are always recorded, despite your console settings.
