Space Echo Question and possible suggestion

Haven't been around for awhile, relocated etc...
All these new toys...

Anyway,
I just installed 4.2 and I've been playing with the space echo.

Is there a way to send a signal through the Space Echo without hearing the echo, or any effect, except the distortion from overloading the input?
It seems like I used to be able to do that with the one I used to own.
Maybe I am wrong though, maybe it wasn't possible with the original?
If not, perhaps this could be implemented...the distortion was so amazing on the right source.

I tried the search function to see if this had already been answered somewhere but it didn't work as expected.

Why don't you just put mode selecter to 1, and turn down reverb, intensity, and echo volume. Then turn input volume up to red-line the meter, (turndown output volume to taste)

You can hear the unit without echo and reverb this way.........

Thanks for the input, but your idea still doesn't allow you to hear only the distorted input/output. The distortion is only present in the echo signal when you drive it into the red. I would like to be able to use the space echo as a distortion/drive fx sometimes but I don't think it is possible.

All you get with this approach is the clean direct signal, no matter how hi you set the input.

Set it to mode 1, activate \"Wet Solo\", turn down the intensity and adjust the repeat rate to get the desired tone. All you'll hear is the echo, but it will of course be lagged a bit; the amount of delay is shown, so you'll need to offset the track minus \"that amount\".
Of course, the tape has quite a bit of wow and flutter, so I don't know if you're going to actually want to use this effect too much.
