I'm dealing with a vocal that just. won't. sit. in. the. F@#$@ing. mix.

That got me thinking. When you hit a wall in a mix and start zeroing in too much on one thing, what do you do? I'm finding it hard not to obsess and keep screwing with it... but maybe I'm just experiencing some tunnel vision.

Do you just start working on some other element of the mix? Even though it's the vocal that's giving you the problem?

A possible solution:

Start with the vocal sound and build the mix around it...
I do it quite often.

Yep, me too. If the vocal don't fit in the mix, then the mix has to fit around the vocal.

Hey matt what kind of song is it? Is it a problem that needs to be fixed or are you trying to find the right vibe. If you really can't get anywhere you might try doing something you normally wouldn't do like process the hell out of something that should be natural and then come back to it. I do that with drums alot. But it kind of would depend on the timeline you're working with. - lance

it's a hip hop track for a record i'm mixing. It's one of the problem mixes on the record for me.

Yeah, it's definitely more of a vibe thing. The take sounds great. At this point, I think the thing to do will be to get away from the idea of a clean vocal (as it just isn't a cleanly recorded vocal... it's pretty dark and theres some midrangeyness to it around the 3 k area) and squash the crap out of it, go with the 'dark' vibe to it....

Hey that's kind of where I go if I can't seem to fit the vibe. I go overboard then scale it back until It sounds right. Is this at your room or the big place. Just curious as to what kind of room you're working in outside of work.

By the way you're still scaring me with that bat. Hey, whatever happened to that roll call idea you had?

\"it'd also be kind of cool to have something of a 'roll call' of the regulars. it might give some things perspective. you know, what you do, where your from, your involvement in music, etc.\"

I think that was a good idea. It's pretty sad that that thread was posted in november and is still on the first page.

This is a low budget thing I'm doing at home. Very non-optimal listening environment, however somehow I manage to pull mixes out of it that clients like. Mixing in nuendo 3.2, URS/UAD plugs, etc etc.

Yeah I'm in the process of creating my optimal listening environment( it's a slow process) so every thing I'm doing right now is experimental. But I don't have time for anything serious right now anyway

hey scott - anyword on that hosting?

(any mods wanna weigh in on this?)
Unfortunately, we can't host the files on the forum server. A few months ago, when I needed a free hosting service, I had found files-upload.com to be the most hassle-free one.
