SSL 360 Link: UC1 vs. Console 1

Now that SSL 360 Link comes preset to control UA plugins, does anyone have any experience comparing UC1 against Console 1?

Based on the list of UA plugins that I saw there is only 1 preset, UA SSL 4K.

@DrewMazurek, would you be able to share some insight on how the link plugin actually works please? It looks to me like it's just really a communication link between the 360 mixer and any VST3 plugins you insert in the channel, with the added mapping layer to the hardware knobs. It doesn't look like it's really "hosting" anything. Am I wrong?

I don't have Console 1, so I don't know if it works the same way, or if it actually hosts the UA plugins it supports.

Also, would you be able to clarify the VST3 requirement? Is LUNA running 3rd party plugins in VST3 formats when available? I thought LUNA only ran the VST3 version for the SSL 360 plugins.

Thanks!

I don't want to say to much this soon, this is SSL's NAMM announcement. As they've said, the Link plug hosts the UAD plug within it, just as Softube's C1 plugin does.

I've been beta testing 360 link and making my own mappings. It works very well but like Drew can't say any more. I've already easily mapped my Softube British Class A and UA 1073/84 and am happily using them in Cubase and S1.

I'm not a Console 1 user so can't really make a valid comparison.

Since I sold off my Mackie controllers and Console One v2; and invested in the three-piece SSL control setup, pretty happy to see the announcement today for NAMM in my inbox. :) A buddy (also Logic X and UAD2 user), I've been trying to convince to jump on the SSL setup and I were talking about the need for some kind of roll your own setup, and here it is. Sweet. Super sweet. :)

What do you like better about the UC1 over Console 1?

UC1 seems more focused on the SSL plugins I actually use, same layout without having to hack with color stickers (you should see the custom job I did on the v2 Console One to make it fit my brain) ... for my workflow the SSL controllers seem "just right" to me. Oh, found photo of my custom Console One; achieved with stickers and rubber bands (!).

That’s funny, I remember that picture. I out stickers on my c1, but I barely even look at it now, it’s just muscle memory most of the time and I don’t even see the colors anymore. But your picture inspired me back then (April of 2020 was when I got c1)

Really excited about this! Thanks for posting this. I was unaware of this upcoming new UC1 feature. Looking forward to using my many 3rd party plugins with my UC1.

Console 1 loads the DSP code directly from the chips. That's why you can load parts of a channel strip. No VST or any other format, just the code itself.

What's that faceplate on the left with the little windows in it?

You mean above the 3 Apollos? It;'s a rack unit for running cables to the back, as I took out the patchbay once I got third Apollo. Also ventilation I suppose. I had that piece in closet - at old house I had it at bottom of rack, and had Mackie control knob and could run cables through the rack vs having hanging off side of desk. Filling a hole, basically :)

I figured, but wasn't sure if that's what it was. (y)

You'll be able to make your own of course. I have already done the 1084 and 1073 and several others.

SSL very well may ship with more and we can all share them here, the files are easily accessible.
Do 3rd party plugins work with the meters as well? Like if you use the UAD 4k will the gain reduction from the compressor show up on the UC1?
