The studio that I work in has a multi unit cascaded Apollo setup.... 3 x Apollo x16s and an X4. The x4 is also expanded via adat with an RME interface. Everything is clocked from the first x16 unit (the one connected to the computer).
On that first unit, the first channel, channel 1, is intermittently clicking / popping. Quietly, but noticeable on quiet recordings. Sounds like little static clicks to me. The clicks are not in time with anything, and appear random.
All other channels, on all units are absolutely fine... it's just channel 1 on the first x16.
We have 16 external mic pres connected to that unit, but even when we unplug them the x16 channel 1 still makes those noises when record enabled (so that rules out any other culprits).
Here are some troubleshooting steps we have taken so far:
- turned off the RME interface in case there was some kind of clocking issue. The issue remains.
- disconnected all external pres. The issue remains.
- disconnected all external peripherals from the computer (including USB hubs etc), apart from the interfaces... the issue remains.
- attempted to clock from a different Apollo unit... the issue remains.
- tried multiple buffer sizes from 32 to 512. Issue remains.
Could anyone offer any advice or other troubleshooting tips to try to get to the bottom of this? Seems very strange that it's only occurring on one channel, which leads me towards it being a defective unit rather than interference etc, but I'm not overly technical.
System:
- Macbook Pro 16" M1 Max
- OS Ventura
- 64GB RAM
- issue present in both Logic and Pro Tools
I will do my best to get an audio recording of it happening tomorrow, but in the meantime are there any suggestions?
