KRK V6 & Dynaudio BM5A monitors are some good active ones in that price range. If you already have a good amp, the Event PSP8's, Dynaudio BM6P's, ADAM ANF10's, & new Tannoy monitors (can't remember the name) would be even better.

I'll second that. Thanks Eric, for my BM6P's. They are fantastic with a Hafler P1500 amp.

They do take a significant amoutn of time to \"break in\". I actually hated them for a couple of days until the break in was complete, then they started sounding better.

Break them in properly if you get them!

Interesting! I'll have to head over to Dave's to hear them again now that they're \"ready\". :)

The Blue Sky Mediadesk is excellent.
Boxy & upper-bass heavy in my experience.

Eric,

I am in the market for new monitors to upgrade from my Behringer Truth B2031. My work musically is in the deep/west coast house and drum and bass. How would you rank the following monitors for these styles of music? Granted the price range varies, but I am interested to get a feel for the KRK landscape. Also, I have a Tannoy PS110B Subwoofer, would you recommend moving to a matched KRK sub?

KRK V6 Series 2
KRK V8 Series 1
KRK V8 Series 2
KRK RP8

Thanks,

:: Chuck

Hey Chuck,

Check out the other monitor discussion going on, the KRK's get brought up there:

http://www.chrismilne.com/uadforums/viewtopic.php?t=3282

For house & jungle, you'll appreciate the low end detail of the Event ASP8's. Does your sub have a tuneable crossover or a built-in crossover for the monitors? I don't think it's necessary for your sub & monitors to be the same brand as long as the sub will filter out the lows going to the monitors.

I would love to get the ASP8's, though they are slightly outside of my budget. Do you need a sub with those monitors?

Also, I am following the other thread. I can post my questions over there, going forward.

Cheers,

Depends how you set them up. If you have the sats on a desk then they're likely to sound rather boxy (I found this). I set them up on desktop mic stands at ear height (so the tweeters point stright at me, as they didn't on the desk) and the sound cleared up.

As for the bass, that'll depend on the room - you need to calibrate the sub once you've set it up. I've no complaints about the bass, but the sub won't go very loud before farting, but it's not designed to fill a large room.

So if you have a large room and fancy monitoring at fairly high volume, the Mediadesk aren't for you. For close nearfield work they're very good though.

Eric,

Yeah, my sub has a tunable crossover. I am pretty happy with the Tannoy sub, though I wish it hit a bit lower in the frequency range.

Would you recommend a sub with the Event ASP8s? Considering the style of music I am producing.

Also, thanks for your valuable input.

I'm using a JBL LSR12P & it reproduces frequencies as low as you'd need. I don't know how the Tannoy compares to it, though you should be fine as long as it can reproduce a 50 Hz sine wave.

Eric,

I decided and went with the KRK V8 Series 2, which sound very nice (especially compared to my Behringer B2031). My Tannoy sub will go down to 34 Hz and seem to compliment the KRKs very nicely. While I would have loved to have purchased the ASP8s, they are just a bit more than I need to be spending right now. The KRKs seem to have a very nice midrange and fairly good punch. I have heard that after I \"break-in\" the drivers that they will sound even better. Would you be able to comment on this statement?

Thanks again for your opinions and help. I enjoy hearing what everyone has to say on the monitor subject.

Cheers,

:: Chuck

The Series 2's sound pretty bad so I never got to the point of breaking them in. You might want to search out a used pair of the original V8's, those were better (still harsh but they sound good as midfields). Original paper cone-V6's sound awesome mated with a sub, very similar to the E8T's that way.
