Submixing Drums....

Hi guys,
I'm curious how you guys here who track live drums submix them.
The drum mics are: 1 inside kick, snare top and bottom, three toms, Hi-hat, Ride, left and right Overheads and a room mic.

Thanks for any input!

Get somebody to tune the kickdrum (and the rest) properly, don´t put the mic in too far in the kick, try putting it at the hole. What mics do you use? Put a heavy stone IN the kickdrum: this prevents the cushion from shifting and adds some weight which will translate into a louder bang. Take some blankets and put them over the kick without getting in the way of the toms or the snarebottom: this helps to isolate the kick from the rest and vice versa. Forget the blanket if it´s a really good set and a fine room. On digital media try some expanders on kick and snare, put down the spill about 6dB (and more if needed) with \"look forward\" in the expander switched in to catch the transients. And take in mind i might be a loony without a clue.....so take your time, try some things differently

ahhh...New Zealand....sigh...

The Chills, Bailter Space...everyone I know who got back from there said they wished they could have stayed!
Anyway, for a extra smoooooth hihat, try a ribbon mic, for example a cheap used M500 Beyerdynamic - most folks don´t even know it´s a ribbon, because it looks just like your average SM58/vocal mic. If your toms sound less than stellar: cheat! Trigger the things with some nice tom-samples and mix this in, adjust levels to taste

If the kick sounds too muffled, get a harder beater or glue a coin to the beater - this eats drumeheads like nothing but there are certains stickers you can buy at the shop which help the drumhead survive a bit longer.

arrgh: a loony who talks too much.
