Tough to Get Lion Clean (Even Presets Aren't?)

FWIW, I bought the Lion primarily for the cleans after watching some demo videos. I also have Ruby and Dream, but I find the Lion to be 'cleaner'.
That's interesting, because my friend brought his Dream over and we A/B'd and experimented for 2 hours and the Dream was much cleaner for us, with a Strat, a G&L ASAT Classic and an Echo Park semi-hollow.

They are very different clean tones.
Fender - sparkly with scooped out mids.
Marshal - more mids with a faster response.

As @Medronio mentions a couple posts back, go into the ‘low’ input via the app and switch the cab to the 1x12” EV (green 1) or JB/GB (red 3).
Use the Super Bass model.
Lower the guitar’s volume from 10 to 9 (or 8). Or, just lighten up a bit on your picking/strumming hand.

I'm primarily a bone tone player, though I do use a tremelo pedal if I don't have one on my amp, or a klon style pedal for a bit of a more compressed/fatter sound, so I'm not sure if that completely counts as bone tone.

Anyways, because of not really using pedals at all, I tend to turn everything up to solo levels and almost sickeningly trebly, then use the combination of volume, tone knobs and playing light verses heavy to get the right amount of clean I need. That way when I'm switching between pickups I can always have the tone I need. You can always take away treble while playing. You can't add it without adjusting your amp.

I own the dream, ruby and now the lion and I like them all a lot. Id say they all do a clean tone really well, just differently from each other.

Clean is really relative, and dependant on the music and band/instruments you have around your guitar playing. A lot of tones that sound like garbage in solo sound great in context. And sometimes a little tiny bit of overdrive fills the tone out in a pleasing way that isn't noticable in the context of a mix until you take it away.

Just my two cents of course.

Yeah, I've done all that. I just mean the Dream is clean from the get go, and you can turn up the gain more before it gets overdriven, whereas the Lion is really only clean on the Bass model with both gains way down. At least with the guitars I've used.

Full disclosure I've never owned a vintage style marshal. But I suspect the reason for this is based on the amp itself. From what I recall the jumping off point for some marshalls was the fender brownface amps, then adding another gain stage, tightening up the low end so they didn't collapse on themselves like the fenders did when dimed.

I'm sure someone here whose more of an amp historian will be able to fill in more details.

Essentially correct.
It was a 1958 Fender Bassman with the 5F6-A circuit (40 watts, 4x10”).
The circuitry was modified to accommodate more readily available European parts and later further tweaked for the tighter bass response … and so on and so forth.

Yesterday I was messing around with a fuzz into the Lion.
It really cleans up well with the volume knob (with a Strat).

My clean is Cory Wong Funk rhythm clean 😎 the Lion has it in it to do clean but you really have to dial it in.

I'm mulling Lion as a clean and dirty platform. I think Dream is also difficult to Dual in a clean.

Any advice or should I buy a non uafx Amp in a box amp?or just use the clean channel of my Deluxe 112 solid state or a Tonex? Is it pointless to use an amp in a box with an actual amp?

I can't afford an frfr at the moment 😥

Are you running the pedal into the front of an amp or fx return?

I personally would not recommend or run any of the UAFX pedals into the front of an amp.

into fx return is fine with cab sim off or into power amp pedal or dedicated power amp and cabs is great. I run mine into a couple power amps pushing a few cabs. Just need clean power amp. Does not need to be tube. Pedals do the tube emulation great already.

I love Plexi cleans. Lion 68 Super Bass is amazing clean, but for pristine super cleans the Knuckles is outstanding. Different than Marshall or Fender cleans. Surprised me completely. Would actually make a great pedal platform clean if you wanted. The Anti 1992 does a good clean also. Super clean.

I preferred the Knuckles clean over the Anti 1992 but they both do the kind of clean that I can crank both of my humbuckers full volume and not even a hint of breakup on. Even the Super Bass I have to roll back a notch on guitar volumes (at least from what I remember - I’ll have to test again). My favorite clean is the type with Super Bass clean on neck pickup rolled down on volume (50’s wiring in all my guitars I’m currently using), then flip to bridge with volume full for some light rock gain (Jimmy Page style).

The Lion 68 truly rocks like that - I keep the EP3 boost on with light bump on the boost

I only have the plug but I too much prefer the Lion for cleaner stuff. Now I don't have any problem dialing in the Dream or the Ruby, but there is something about the Lion cleaner for some things.

I bought that after I got my Suhr SSS. The problem I had is it was TOO clean for my taste.
