All models work with the UAD-1, some just work better. The Dual 1.8Ghz & 2.0GHz models that don't have PCI-X slots are the ones you want for optimal UAD performance.

Don't forget that the recently released line of Macs comes with OSX 10.4 Tiger, which is not currently compatible with the UAD1.

If you were looking at the most "PC like" performance from the UAD1, the smart money would go on the PCI only DP 2ghz model.

Cheers

Hi Guys,
The 2.3 and 2.7 are not the best choices for UAD-1 performance. Both of these machines have the AMD-8131 chipset and are limiting the number of plugins you can run effectively (basically it's the same as with the older 2.0 and 2.5 models). I have been testing with the very newest Dual 2.0 (which does not use the 8131, and is PCI) and it's running very well; much like the previous Dual 1.8 :)

Respectfully, James and others, to me it makes little sense to base an expensive computer purchase only on how many UAD plug-ins you can run, much as I love them.

My advice is to buy the fastest computer you can afford. I am running an older 2.0 dual G5 and it is graat. With Logic 7.1 I can now put UAD plug-ins on busses and if I am using too many on channels at mix time I simply perform "Track to Audio" on some tracks and all is good to go.

Think of the big picture.

Is this lower performance problem with the new dual 2.7's something that will be fixes by UAD? How many plug ins will a card be able to run in comparison to another computer? I just got a new dual 2.7 and have 2 UAD-1 cards... just trying to get a feel for what I should expect.

thanks

2.7 DP only runs Tiger

I was informed by my local pro music shop that the new G5 2.7DP not only comes with Tiger, but will only run Tiger. So apparantly if you bought one, (which I'm planning on doing as soon as the UAD-1 is ready) you will have to wait to use your UAD-1 with it. You can't install Panther in the meantime, as I believe has been suggested previously in other threads. If anyone has any other information to verify, or debunk this, please let me know
thanks

I've already heard reports form others who have successfully loaded Panther on a new 2.7.

As far as the limitations on plug in counts. it varies from plug to plug. In my personal tests using my 1.8DP, I was able to get full use of my 4 UAD's when it came to some plug ins, like the Plate 140, Dreamverb, Nigel, CS1. I got close to full use with, Pultec. Overall the limitations can be quite severe, so I wouldn't say that its a non issue. Go here to see my full test results:

You can install later versions of Panther on the G5s that come with Tiger. I installed a backup of my 10.3.9 install onto it when it arrived. Basically you attach your backup to the G5, boot from a Panther or Tiger installer CD and startup Disk Utility (you'll find it under the Installer menu when booted from the CD). Then wipe the factory Tiger install and use the Restore tab to clone your backup to the G5s internal drive. Tada.

The issue with these G5s that use the AMD-8131 chipset is a hardware limitation of this chipset. It's basically limiting the number of plugins (transfer streams) that you can possibly run. The following links will provide more info than you ever wanted to know about it ;)

2.7 DP specifically

James,
Have you done that with the 2.7 DP specifically? Trace mentioned that he has heard of others who have, but if you have as well, that would be added comfort. I'm planning on purchasing the 2.7 as soon as the UAD is compatable. I'm holding back because I was told by my local pro music shop that they were able to get a confirmation from apple that the 2.7 DP does not support anything earlier than Tiger. Thanks

No I did it with the new Dual 2.0. I had also heard reports from all over that they would not boot Panther. This maybe the case with earlier versions of Panther (such as 10.3.0), but they all *should* at least boot 10.3.9 (which is what I installed, through a backup).
