UA Sphere questions.

So I got the LX in a bundle with an Apollo x6 which I like so far a lot. My question is regarding my workflow. I place the sphere vst in the console and I select a mic then record the vocal with UA console set to Mon. i get a dry stereo track recorded into my Daw. I then place the sphere vst on the channel in the daw. I am doing it this way so I can change mic models to get to one I like best for the song I am doing. So here’s the question, when I change mic models I am not hearing much or perhaps no difference between them, could I be doing something wrong?

I am using Ableton Live Standard latest version , windows 11, i9 processor.
Hey, I think one thing to say is that the difference between the condensers is really subtle. You’ll mostly notice it on something like distorted guitar, but on vocals for example, some mics will be almost indistinguishable.

Just to double check, flip between any condenser model and the Royer Ribbon 121. You should hear a pretty noticeable roll off on the top end on the Royer. It’ll be the best way to do a clear troubleshoot as to whether you have a technical problem, or just the reality that high end mics don’t vary as much as you might think!

I do notice the difference with the royer versus a condenser model when I record the same phrase and then listen back to back in a new Ableton session that was created using UAD console rec option.
Using the original workflow I described in my first post I don’t think I am hearing a difference.

What you’re doing in your original workflow is absolutely correct. That should work fine.

So, if it isn’t, then let’s check something further.
In the Sphere plugin, do you hear any difference when you set a mic to cardioid, then use the flip button on the polar pattern to reverse the direction the mic is facing? This should make the audio quieter, because it’s like you were recording on the back of a cardioid pattern mic.

Also, when you look at the stereo wave form, one side should be visibly quieter than the other (representing the capsule that’s facing away from you)

further, without the Sphere plugin inserted, listening to the take should sound like the audio is panned to the left (or right depending on the orientation of the mic)

Gosh, sorry! That’s lots of things to check! But let me know the results and we can keep investigating!

For each of the tests I hear the expected results so I conclude the plug-in is working and also the difference between models is subtle. I discovered the a/b button and when using that I can better hear the difference between models. Thanks A.C for your kind and helpful direction.

Oh I’m so pleased to hear it seems to be behaving itself! I hope you have a ton of fun with it! ☺
