Uad-1 and Vst 3.0

Here is a quote from Steinberg.net

The way it will work is that Steinberg will specify how plugin vendors can implement sidechaining as part of the VST 3.0 spec. When that's released, the vendors will all have to write/test/release new versions of their plugins.

So at least initially, only the included Steinberg plugins will have it.

If you were hoping that when 4.1 comes out you'll suddenly be able to sidechain with all your existing plugs, I doubt it.
So I'm hoping that I will be able to use my uad plugins for sidechaining.

hmmm what do you mean by side chaining.
Do enlight me ...

Well Cubase 4 was supposed to have native sidechaining from the begining, it's why I bought it....but in usual Steinberg style it wasn't implemented on release.

Now it's nearly ready with the 4.1 update it means that you can have say your kick drum activate a compressor on your bass line. It's a much used trick which helps your drums cut through a mix.

But it's looking like if your plugins are not Vst 3.0 then you won't be able to use them for sidechaining.

As far as I've understood the situation, Steinberg hasn't released the SDK coding for VST 3.0 to developerer yet, so no one but Steinberg has that yet.

It's true that they promised this feauture in 4.1 but that has been postponed. The word is that they'll relase Nuendo 4 first, and then the 4.1... and then they'll release the SDK for vst 3.0

Not sure if I am stating the obvious, but...

When Cubase 4.1 is eventually released, only the included plug-ins will support side-chaining. Older VST 2.4 plug-ins will not support it according to the new side-chaining scheme of Steinbergs (they can of course support it like Voxengo Crunshessor does today through bussing). Like stated in the first post, other developers (for example UA) must update their plug-ins according to VST 3 specifications and release new versions in order for the side-chaining to be supported. To do this, they must have the VST 3 SDK, which has not been released, and will not be released for quite some time.

I assume that just because a compressor plug-in is VST 3, it does not automatically have to support side-chaining. As far as I know, UA has not made any statement regarding if side-chaining will be supported. They could argue: The HW does not have external SC input, so why should the plug-ins?

Also, I would be surprised if VST3 plug-ins are compatible with VST 2.4 hosts. This means that any plug-in vendor would have to support double versions of their plug-ins; VST 3 for C4 and VST 2.4 for everyone else. That is a good incentive not to jump onto VST 3 too early, before the major VST hosts support VST 3, and VST 2.4 support can be dropped.

I certainly hope this last bit is not true. I've grown to hate Steinberg due to the way they treat their customers and have stuck at SX3. I will never buy anymore Steinberg products. I've been toying with Reaper and have paid for it but I keep starting new projects in SX3. I've been meaning to give Samplitude a go but haven't got round to it. Quite honestly, I would like to stick with SX3 forever, I never seem to want or need any new features added to DAWs anymore.

If VST 3 isn't backward compatible it would only be to force people into upgrades they didn't necessarily want and not for any real technical reason - and I wouldn't be surprised by Steinberg doing that! They really are @*$£"^&!!!!

Hmmm.... I've grown a huge dislike to steinberg as well. Sometimes it feels like they don't even use their own programs. Problem is that i've found it very hard to jump ship since i've been working in cubase since 1989...

ANYWAYS....

I can only send a gentle message to a company i like a lot more:

UA: PLEASE DO INCLUDE SIDECHAIN AS SOON AS YOU CAN!

Actually it's called \"External keying\" the real Neve 88rs channel strip (the one you & I can't afford :D ) has a button for that so the gate can work as a ducker... verrry handy & we would love to have it and my prediction: We're not going to get it. But I'd love to be wrong of course!!!
