UAD-1 studio pak making system freeze and crash! Please help

Well I just purchased the studio pak and am having some serious issues with my system freezing up and crashing. I have a G4 466 single processor and am using Digital Performer 3.02 with a 2408 MKII with a PCI-324 card. I originally had nothing in the first PCI slot with the PCI-324 card in slot 2 and put the UAD-1 in the 3rd slot I was able to use 3 plugs (2 LA-2As and 1 1176SE) and then tried using 1 Dreamverb and that's when my system began freezing and crashing right when I put the Dreamverb as an insert...so then I reinstalled the PCI cards so that the PCI-324 was in the 1st slot, right next to the graphics card, and moved the UAD-1 to the second slot, but the system still is freezing up. I really don't know what to do, would moving either of the cards to different slots help? Is the UAD-1 just not liking the PCI-324 card? I get really ugly sounding breakup before the freezing...Can anyone shed some light on this problem? I'm really getting a bit desperate here, all responses are GREATLY appreciated. Thanks, David

Hi Dlux,
Just to isolate the 324, use the Mac's built in sound in DP and see if the performance from the UAD-1 is any different. Also, make sure that your G4 is an AGP Graphics G4. If it is using PCI graphics (or if you have a second PCI graphics card installed) too much bandwidth is probably being used up by the PCI graphics for the UAD-1 to work well enough, especially alongside the 324.

Hey James, I went into DP and used Sound Manger instead of the PCI-324 under my 'Audio Hardware' settings although I guess the input and output still say PCI-324...I'm not sure if this is what you meant for me to do. Anyway, I also switched my cards back so that they're in slots 2 and 3 instead of 1 and 2 and also reopened the project I was working on (a copy of it anyway) and it seemed to run much smoother. Then I closed it and opened a different project to start mixing it and it was going o.k. after I'd used about 3 compressor plugs and then it started getting the pops and clicks and freezing so I had to keep restarting the computer...so I guess I know it's possible to get it to work without freezing but I've only had about 1 instance of this...I'm wondering if muting channels etc. in the project will help the UAD-1 to work better without crashing my system? Is There anything else I can do? Thanks SO MUCH, David

In DP, if you switch audio interfaces, you need to change the Audio bundle assignments. If you go to Studio>Audio Bundles, you can set it so you are using the Built-in Audio outs in the mixer.

From the MOTU PCI console, you can click Enable Routing and disable any input/outputs that you do not use. This will reduce the amount of PCI bandwidth used by the 324 and in general helps it run smoother (the same applies for the 424).

freeze

I have that problem (noise, freeze) sometimes using the Fairchild on the stereo output bus. I've seen that other people have also had the freeze followed by noise. Someone said that AutoTune seems to be a culprit. I found that when I switch the Fairchild for the Precision Limiter, the freeze/noise goes away.
