UAD cards w/o heat sinks?

JLiRD808

I've come across a couple of UAD cards on EBAY that don't have the heat sink on top of the DSP processor. When asked about them they say that they just didn't come with one.

Is this true? If not, can't I just add my own heat sink on top?

Thanks!

(my first post!)

Don't know , are these designed for Roland or Mackie hardware perhaps. There is every chance it's a slightly less powerful processor if it is true.

Its the Project Pak UAD-1 PCI. I saw pics of the box its definitely for DAW. He says he bought in early '05.

Here's the EBAY link. I already bought so...go figure!:

U can see the pic of the PCI card with no heat sink. A potential buyer also already asked him about it as you can see.

Thanks for any help on this. I hope the DSPs no less powerful!!!

Hmm, this is strange. My UAD1 cards run so hot that they would break down without a heatsink. The heatsinks are so hot that you cannot touch them.

This is definitely fishy. UA started using larger heat sinks a few years ago because the original ones weren't working out in multi-card setups, there's no way they would have produced a sink-less card in '05. You'd better contact UA directly about this one.

That is quite bizarre. Mine are also very toasty - I certainly wouldn't want to run mine without heatsinks!

I would also question where the original heatsink is and why it is not still on the UAD-1. I have never heard of a heatsinkless UAD-1. I'd be worried about possible damage if it had been used without one. With so many deals on brand new UAD-1's and plenty of used ones (with heatsinks) at bargain prices, I would not even entertain the idea. Unless he was practically.....giving it away.

Get a serial number and call UA. The card had to have been registerd. UA might have forgotten to put one on the card.. it's certainly drilled for one.:?

Call UA and ask!

To be honest....IMHO

That seller is full of SH*T

looks like it SOLD... o'well..

UAD cards w/o heat sinks

Good evening,

I am the seller of the UAD card in discussion here. And in my research of the issue to assist the buyer, starting with this very web discussion board, I found the following link as a result.

Please consider researching your answer before you call someone full of crap and liars.

Thank you for your consideration in this matter,

Hey Hoff:

Thanks a lot for the link and the insight!!

I'm doing some more follow up too and it looks like you're right and things are not as scary as I thought. I suppose I should've "searched" first too instead of just posting.

Sorry,
Jason

What ever PAL.
Why didn't you address the fact that it had no Heat Sink, when you got it?
Let me guess... you didn't know it was supposed to have one or just didn't care. Right?
Who knows what kind of condition that thing is in now!
Your selling damaged goods IMO.
The person who buys that will have to pay shipping to and from UA as well as the repair fee. By the time all is said and done, that person should have just bought a new one.
Hopefully and I mean hopefully UA will be nice enough to help who ever bought the card, at little or no cost.
But you got your 270 out of it...

I just hope your nice enough to supply the original receipts...

Lesson learned..

God, I love Ebay..

Hoffwego, thanks for posting the info. Indeed the heatsink is missing from the card you sold. You've confirmed that it seems to be from manufacturing (UA has admitted that some have been mismanufactured). Nevertheless, the card should have a heatsink to function reliably long-term and you, as the seller, or the buyer should definitely contact Universal Audio so that they (UA) can make it right.

Unfortunately, eBay has become a tool to victimize many and, as such, sellers with moderate amounts of feedback are under a more scrutinizing eye when buyers are contemplating a transaction of any sizable amount from the said sellers.

Keep in mind also that we of this forum, collectively, own thousands of UAD-1 cards and in thousands of cards there is scarcely any mention of a card being heatsinkless.

I don't doubt your claim at all, in fact I posted evidence substantiating it. On the other hand, we DO have a right to question something when something doesn't seem right.

Regards,

Matt

JLiRD808,

In all fairness, manufacturers revise their boards and chips all the time - someone out of the loop and not particularly into computers may not think anything of it, despite the glaring difference of the actual card from the card pictured on the box.

My concern would be the longevity of the card after running with no heat dissipation for some time. If I were the seller I would offer a refund, or at the very least offer to cover the shipping to have it sent to UA and back. I've had something like that happen a time or two before in the 900+ eBay transactions I've had.

I'm sure the two of you and UA can get everything resolved.

OK so I talked to tech support and the guy said something I thought was kinda funny.

He said the DSP doesn't really need a heatsink!!!?

I don't know if that's true or not but I made him repeat it a couple of times. He said the heat sink is strictly a safety measure. When I asked if I can just put my own on anyways he said that UA doesn't support any alterations to their equipment.

I wonder though, might he've been blowing me off cuz I've got a second-hand \"off-EBAY\" card?

Or could it be true?
