UAD for laptops! finally!

Sure hope I'm wrong, but that seems to indicate a more powerful card is still not here. The press release says nothing about processing power, probably implicating it's equal to the PCI.
No further comment.

I get the same impression, especially considering the price. Let's see. Maybe they'll increase the 4 card limit? :-k

Akis,
you're right. Raising the card limit in combination with a driver featuring proper load balancing might be a temporary solution.
The more I think about it, the more it makes sense I'm afraid.
This seems to be the best of several worlds for UA, not necessarily for us.
New customers means additional income, cool with me.
Could be the model for future devices (both Laptop and PCIe) - very cool, much better than Firewire or LAN.
Kind of a paid beta version  - also cool.
The only thing I absolutely dislike in that context is the word \"future\".
But let's wait for the official announcement, still hope there's more.
Cheers,
Cooper

If they did that, I would be set. I have 4 cards already and a 7-slot Magma chassis. My biggest problems right now are the fact that 4 cards, especially when using the full Neve plugs are just not enough, would love the ability to have 6, and the load balancing issue of course.

If they came out with another, more powerful card, it would probably cost twice as much anyway, so for me the issue is the limit of the amount of power you can put on your system with the cards.

Since Magma chassis are rediculously priced (unless you get lucky and find one with a cable on eBay), UA should probably look into making a Duende type of box for their cards and give the customers the option to add as many cards as they can afford/need for their projects; 10 would be insane.

Also, I can't afford to upgrade technology as much as people who are hobbyists, so personally, I would rather have the ability to use more of a card I know plays well with the rest of my system, than to have to deal with the issues of a new platform.

i have a friend that just bought a mac laptop but he said he wouldnt be interested in a UAD-1 because he was going to wait for a UAD-2.

I am begining to wonder if there will ever be one... :?

I must be missing something.....

It says there is a PCIe adapter so that this new DSP engine (rack mount I assume) can be used with a desktop.

There are no specifics one way or the other regarding how powerful (or not powerful) the DSP engine is that connects to the ExpressCard and PCIe host card.

So, why the pessimism already before we even know what it really is?????

If this DSP engine is as powerful or more powerful than several UAD-1s, then what is the problem with this as the \"UAD-2\" solution?

Fwiw, I wouldn't put marginal info like \"more power\" into a much anticipated press release either. :p
No offense meant, I'd be very happy to be proven wrong.

I just watched the promo video : same power as ONE regular UAD-1. No info about the possibility to even chain xpanders.

Simply said : useless.

I see there's also a new \"Extreme Pack\", which is just the UAD-1e card with all the plugs included. So it appears there's no new, powerful card coming out anytime soon.

if someone asks me... i would say that this is EXTREMLY USELESS, because you can only work with the power of one uad-1 card per uad xpander...

so there are 2 ways for UAUDIO to react.. and this should happen now believe me....

1. UAD-2
2. Reduce and Optimize program code for 4.6...

1 card per Expander.. hahahahaha..

uaudio - you should think about a uad-2 and 2 should come fast and at least offer 4 times the dsp power of a uad-1

This could ofcourse open the way for a UAD-4 expander (and 2 uad-4 for a desktop system...) I hope (for you who need it, I can´t afford the neve bundle so I´m doing fine witm my 2 Uad1pci´s)

I just bought two used magma chassis. But if this UA expansion unit does break the 4-card limit, I'd love to replace both of my magma with them. I was thinking about going 88.2khz, recording and mixing, only that I found I was running out of the resource of my 4 cards with just a few tracks....

that let me think UA no have any new DSP solution,

they just put an UAD-1 in a box to sell outdated DSP at an expensive price,

The new extrem pack with all existing plugin make me feel a bit disapointed (Hey UA think about your loyal customer that invest month after month in each new plugin, and 2O days after you tell them \"hey we purpose you all in one at a greater price\")

i expect i 'm wrong, i expect they put the Xpander to sold all the last UAD-1 DSP,

I expect the money they make with, allow them to put a new more powered UAD on market,

because I think i paid for newer customer and i expect UA purpose somethink for people like me that allow UA to make profit with our loyalty

...

a very disapointed UA's customer for the first time

As it can be heard in the video, the 4 card limit was not raised; not only that, but you can't even use more than one UAD-Xpander - the other 3 cards have to be UAD-1(e).

Just watched the video.

This product didn't come in time for me. I was asking for a \"UAD Mobile\" during the production of our previous album, while back then I had to take my laptop, do the recording elsewhere, maybe some editing when there was still time, and then come home and continue the editing.

Now I just built my own studio and don't need a \"UAD Mobile\" now. And here it is.

Any ideas about a practical use for this new baby?
