An LA3A plugin would be a natural fit for Universal Audio. Another high quality vintage compressor emulation that would not need to be licensed. Probably priced much like the LA2A/1176LN too. They make the hardware why not the software. I want it! :p

What are the differenced between the LA2A and LA3A?

The LA2A is my all time favorite plugin.

The LA3A is solid state, the 2 is tube. 3 has more of a lower mid growl and it colors the sound more than LA2A. I love mine. It's a go to for bass and vocals. I want to buy more. Iwas just saying to another engineer last night that I want 3 more. I would buy the plug instantly if it sounded good.
If they did the LA4A it should be the blackface.

you know what i'd really like to see? a urei 1178 silverface emu. imho it is one of the very best compressors you can get....it has a very solid punch on drums.
That's not the 1176SE plugin?

No, the SE is the 1176 with less dsp processing power required. Anyone ever even use it?

Cool! Nice to hear some calls for a UAD-1 LA3A. Now you're talking folks. While I'm a fan of all UA's plugs, I use my one card for EQ / Compression almost exclusively.

LA2A is my all-time fave. The description of the LA3A by one lucky owner above (more mid-range growl) makes it sound like it lives somewhere in between 1176LN and LA2A (like the 1176LN color-wise, but with the compression curve of the LA2A). Is this right? I'd love to get my hands on a digital version.

BTW - I do use the 1176SE - as a second comp on vocals - right after the LA2A. Works for me.

Joe Meek.

Sorry to be contrarian, but there's an embarrasment of compression riches in the arsenal now and something with a circuit -similar- to what's already in the pantry? Not for me thanks.

As I've made clear, I'd like primary emphasis to be on -new- tools (tape emu of course.) I also think adding side-chaining to the suite (as they did tempo-sync) would answer -many- requests people talk about here.

That said, if they do another comp? I say -nothing- sounds like my old green monster.

UA makes the best compressors, and they own the rights to their own designs (no licensing fees). Bring on the LA3A at 150 bucks please.

Everyone keeps talking about liscensing fees, but I think it's really speculation as to how much it actually adds to the price. People seems to think it adds like $50 per plug in but I bet it's a lot less, maybe $10-15. Neve may be a little more ($25?), since it's such a premium brand. Liscensing didn't start with Roland either. Just because Pultec and Fairchild are out of business, doesn't mean someone doesn't still own the copyrights to the names!

As for LA3A, I've never used it, so I really judge its it, but if UA were to do yet another compressor, I'd like something very different from the others available.

We've already got a 1178... the stereo version of 1176...or two mono's of the 1176LN, all be it a blackface..!

I have a blackface 1176LN and a 1178 and to be honest, the 1178 sounds more like the UA plug more than my hardware 1176... go figure!

Yeah - it's true. I don't know anything about what the licensing fees add up to in terms of consumer cost for a plugin. It sure makes a guy feel like he knows what the hell he's talking about though to throw around the phrase! :p

AMS-Neve today isn't what I'd consider a premium brand, especially in comparison to a monolith like Roland. Roland may very well be the most valuable MI company in the world.

no that's not correct, the 1178 is quite different to simply using two 1176 minus input transformers. we've got three 1178 here, and used to have two blackface 1176. to my ears they sound very different, even if the gain reduction time curves may be very similar (well at least they can both be extremely fast)....where the 1176 sounds a lot like a "tone machine", nearly distorted ans sort of "softened" (which is great for certain things), the 1178 has a distinct solid state character that gives it's punch a lot more "tightness".

whatever.
