No, the SE is the 1176 with less dsp processing power required. Anyone ever even use it?

We've already got a 1178... the stereo version of 1176...or two mono's of the 1176LN, all be it a blackface..!polygen said:you know what i'd really like to see? a urei 1178 silverface emu. imho it is one of the very best compressors you can get....it has a very solid punch on drums.
Yeah - it's true. I don't know anything about what the licensing fees add up to in terms of consumer cost for a plugin. It sure makes a guy feel like he knows what the hell he's talking about though to throw around the phrase!stonefree said:Everyone keeps talking about liscensing fees, but I think it's really speculation as to how much it actually adds to the price. People seems to think it adds like $50 per plug in but I bet it's a lot less, maybe $10-15. Neve may be a little more ($25?), since it's such a premium brand. Liscensing didn't start with Roland either. Just because Pultec and Fairchild are out of business, doesn't mean someone doesn't still own the copyrights to the names!
As for LA3A, I've never used it, so I really judge its it, but if UA were to do yet another compressor, I'd like something very different from the others available.
AMS-Neve today isn't what I'd consider a premium brand, especially in comparison to a monolith like Roland. Roland may very well be the most valuable MI company in the world.stonefree said:People seems to think it adds like $50 per plug in but I bet it's a lot less, maybe $10-15. no that's not correct, the 1178 is quite different to simply using two 1176 minus input transformers. we've got three 1178 here, and used to have two blackface 1176. to my ears they sound very different, even if the gain reduction time curves may be very similar (well at least they can both be extremely fast)....where the 1176 sounds a lot like a "tone machine", nearly distorted ans sort of "softened" (which is great for certain things), the 1178 has a distinct solid state character that gives it's punch a lot more "tightness".mightymike said:We've already got a 1178... the stereo version of 1176...or two mono's of the 1176LN, all be it a blackface..!polygen said:you know what i'd really like to see? a urei 1178 silverface emu. imho it is one of the very best compressors you can get....it has a very solid punch on drums.
I have a blackface 1176LN and a 1178 and to be honest, the 1178 sounds more like the UA plug more than my hardware 1176... go figure!
