UAD plugins and MacMini

Dear UA,

I wonder if, after the release of the new Mac Mini incorporating the Gigabit Ethernet, you really can't consider a software-only version of your plugins. It would be a joy for all Logic users.

I've not seen a cracked version of Logic 7 around. So, maybe you can protect your software in a safe enough way, even without the need of a - hugh! - PCI card.

I miss my UAD plugs a lot :-(

Keep looking the crackers are in full effect. even the ilok dongle is not totally secure.

Ninja,

I don't think so. The iPod doesn't have the same (on the paper) processing power as a Dual G5, and a Gigabit Ethernet that can make it be part of a Logic Node. In other words, you will not make a scalable DSP system out of an iPod.

Ptram,
As powerful as a Mac Mini may be or become in the future it's still a lower end Mac entry model and as such is limited in it's expansion features. The solution for working with a Mac and UAD plug-ins exists already. Buy and use the appropriate hardware.
If you want a word processor/email internet machine buy a Mini. If you want an expandable DAW machine buy a full size MAC.
There's no logical reason UAD should be concerned about providing plugins for stripped down versions of a computer.
Don't get me wrong, I think the Minis are great but I just don't see them as a serious alternative to a full featured Mac model.

Agreed, but the interesting bit about the new Intel mini is that it sports gigabit Ethernet and based on this we can assume the new Macbook (Ibook) will probably include it as well, meaning the entire new line of Intel mac will support 1000 mb/s networking.

Waves already uses this on their APA boxes so we also know gigabit ethernet works for audio. Same with the Distributed Audio Node functionality under Logic Pro.
If UA is working on a UAD-2 solution, it would make sense to use gigabit ethernet, as it is crossplatform and desktop/laptop friendly. 8)
I for one would love to see a halfrack form factor ethernet box a la APA44.
Any thoughts?

Lozion,

\"any thoughts?\"

Yes: the sooner we get rid of PCI cards and ugly expansion chassis, the better.

Obviously, I'm not asking to develop something that already exists, otherwise I would simply buy it. The Distributed Audio was just an example of something that can be done on a technical point of view.
