UAD Really Loud Noise

Apologies if this has been covered. I did attempt a search of the forum before posting.

Just got my UAD Project Pack and installed. Had to put the UAD in the \"middle\" PCI slot because of Radeon 9800 fan.

Anyway, was trying various plugs in DP 5.42 and at about 52% I get a huge \"white noise\" type audio - about blew my head off! Once it starts, even unloading the UA plugs do not cure it. I have the UAD configured to limit processor at 90%. I have a 1st generation DP 1.8 G5. The AMD setting is checked.

I use only softsynths as sound generation and particularly a NI \"Elements of Trance\" based upon their Intackt engine. Nothing has given me any trouble until the install of the UAD.

I hope this ground has been previously covered as I can not risk my monitors or ears to this unexpected blast of noise.

Sincere thanks for any assistance or information.

Same problem here... I just encountered it twice... scared the crap outta me and my cat...lol

OUCH
i use MAudio Firewire Audiophile... happens when i have Realverb Pro \"plugged in\"

i just began my search to find a cure today... all in all, i have my uad running hot at 88-93% and limited at 98%

I was under the impression that the \"white noise blast\" was a problem with the Mbox only. Thankfully in my case, it hasn't happened again since I replaced the Mbox with Presonus Firebox.

As a new user of the UAD, I'm finding my way through all the \"gotchas\" with the device. Like many novice UAD users, my first question was \"how many plugins can I run\"? Well, not that many I'm finding out. Here's what I have read so far:

1. If you have a G5 with the AMD chip - you take a performance hit with UAD.
2. If you are running Panther - you take a another performance hit.
3. If you have a USB or Firewire interface, you take another hit.
4. In some cases, if you add a second UAD - you take a performance hit.

So I guess I shouldn't be surprised that at 3 Pultec's and 1 LA2A, I'm pushing 36% CPU. Sounds like the folks with a G4 under OS9 have it made.

Hopefully, with the new G5's using the AMD chip and Tiger out now, they will be working on the various performance issues. I hope so. Because the plugins sound so good! The LA2A sounds just like I remember it from \"the old days\".

Good luck!

well all that information is interesting... panther and a firewire card lags uad performance? boo... i know this may sound silly, but i intentionally didn't buy a G5 2.0 or 2.5 because I was trying to kep my UAD happy...

What a shame. I feel like it was a lame decision now.

I do have to admit - the pultecs are a plug in blessing as is the la2 and i am slowly being one over by the precision limiter as well (although there is no dither?) - i was a big L2 fan...

anyways, if anyone finds any moe info on the \"White Noise Terror\" - please let me know...

oh... Tiger? that's a whole other story - I have never been so affraid to upgrade to a new OS before... the fear of DP and my other apps not working right scares the crap outta me...

and just think, i just switched over from the world of winndows and apple just begins introducing all these little hiccups just recenty... :(

still love my G5 though... hee hee

Hi Guys,
Have any of you been able to reproduce this case with a particluar plugin or a particular set of plugins? Does it seem to be related to UAD-1 CPU load, or a high number of lower DSP UAD-1 plugins? Also, if you are using Built-In Audio, do you also get the noise problems? Thanks.

Hi James,

As the original poster on this issue, I now believe my problem was the Digidesign Mbox. I have since replaced it and have not experienced the issue again - even at maximum DSP loads.

I began to suspect the Mbox based upon a note in the UA Webzine regarding same. The link to the UA article is in my second post above.

I do not speak for the others that may have this issue with other hardware.

Thanks for taking the time to look in on us!

Yes, there is a known issue with Mbox and white noise, which the UAD seems to exaggerate, however, there shouldn't really be a problem with this with other audio interfaces under normal system usage (this could happen if your host CPU load is very high and you have a firewire interface, as FW is controlled by the host CPU). Any more info the rest of you have would be helpful. Thanks again.

i will try and recreate the scary sound... it was happening with realverb pro... i believe it happened with a 90% uad cpu as well as less... i will double check though, i pretty much just wrote the reverb off at this point though...

noise

I have that problem (noise, freeze) sometimes using the Fairchild on the stereo output bus. I've seen that other people have also had the freeze followed by noise. Someone said that AutoTune seems to be a culprit. I found that when I switch the Fairchild for the Precision Limiter, the freeze/noise goes away.
