UAD1 runs pretty hot!

It's been a while since I've opened my mac's case. I had to switch one of my cards to another and suddenly noticed that the pci-cards are pretty hot, I mean very hot! Mainly the UAD1 cards heat sinks are so hot that I can hardly touch them with fingers. I reorganized the cards so that the UAD1 cards are on top and the powercore is on the bottom. This way the powercore runs much cooler. Now I appreciate the design of the g5 powermac cause there is an extra cooler for the pci cards too.

The UAD-1s do run a bit toasty as it's a pretty heavy duty chip, but the heat sinks do a great job of dispersing the heat. They cool down pretty quickly though; I'd recommend waiting at least a minute or two before moving the card around (or putting your hand/fingers near the heat sinks). I learned that the hard way ;)

Note that in some machines, changing the slot order of PCI cards can put them on different buses, which can change performance of the cards.

Hello -

after times of frequent "not responding" incidents - and after then putting a fan in front of my G5, blowing in the holes and resolving these problems (superstition?) I was also told by a forum member somewhere that it may be a good idea to install a PCI cooling fan next to the UAD.
These are designed for heavy-duty graphics cards (which are somehow related to the UAD, aren't they?)

What do you say, is this nonsense or could this be of use?
(I just read in the other thread that you have "a file" to resolve these "not responding" troubles... well in case they reappear I'll contact you anyway.;))

Best wishes

You can never go wrong with additional cooling.

Having my UAD 1's in a Magma Chassi kesp them pretty cool.

The magma has 3-80mm fans blowing from front to back.

I've got the rackmount magma chassis which uses 3 92mm fans and I actually pulled out the middle one, to reduce noise, with no adverse effects to the 3 UAD 1 and 1 powercore card I have.
