Union amp (bass or guitar) turning up volume vs preamp gain in console

Hey rookie question here

if I am running an amp (say ampeg B15) or any other guitar bass amp, what is the proper gain staging technique? I see there is a volume knob on the amp plug in itself. Should I set the gain that way, or should I set it through my Apollo twin by the preamp fader through console. Is there a difference in controlling the input gain by console pre amp or amp volume?

With Unison amp plugins, bass or guitar, I start with my Twins’ volume all the way down.
If I find I need more level, but adjusting the amp changes the tone I’m going for, I’ll mess around with input gain and clean output in the effects rack section of the amp plugin.
I do the same with Unison mic pres and channel strips.
