Upgrade from 3.9 to 4.8 = clicks and pops

As a long time satisfied user of 2 UAD1s under version 3.9 of the software, I bought the Neve 1073 and cannot resolve the click and pop issue, despite chaning to sonar compatability mode, freewheel, adjusting buffers, changing from WDM to ASIO, etc. This is running on an Athlon 64 X2 3800 XP SP2 with Sonar 4 and and Echo Layla 24. UAD1s are on IRQ 16, and 17, and the Layla card shares and IRQ ( 18 ) with the Nvidia video card. All PCI slots are full.

Under 3.9, I could run just about as many instances of UAD plugs as I wanted until the UAD CPU maxed out, but under software 4.8, and single instance of the 1073 clicks and pops. The VST scanner crashes on demo or expired plugs unless I remove the Dlls from the powered plugs directory. Others may try this workaround as I've seen that problem posted also. Same issue with the new VST wrapper from Sonar as well as an upgrade to Sonar 7.

Any idea why a single instance of a plug in in 4.8 would pop, when the identical config under 3.9 would allow trouble free operation of many plug ins ? I have run several plate 140s, a bunch of 1176s, and a few Fairchilds under the old software with no issues. Main issue is why I should have to do so much tweaking to get 4.8 to work ? Seems related to video and the Nvidia sharing the the Layla might be a clue, but not an issue under 3.9.

I have ( had untill last week ) nearly the same setup as yours. On 3.9 I had to use the dissable turbo registry switch to get glitch free performance when I moved up to 4.80.:

\"[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Universal Audio\\Powered Plugins\\UAD HypTopo]

\"DmaMode\"=dword:00000000
\"DmaTurbo\"=dword:00000001

You could try and set it to 0 to disable.\"

Our Layla always worked better in WDM than ASIO. 6.14 is the driver.
Also, we HAD to use the PCI latencey tool. Might have been our Mobo ( gigabyte Kns-pro ) but it would not run stable without it.

Your MMV but our system was useless without backing off the video from 255 to at least 64 ( at least on the same level as the UAD-1 cards )

Just upgraded our post room computer to a quad so all bets are off now. Would like to know if the Turbo switch is STILL recomended.

Love the Layla BTW. Still one of the best 24 bit converters around for the money and the digital mixer is a headphone distribution godsend!

I tried the registry switch, but i had to create the key and dwords rather than change them, but that may be because I tried installing V 4.6 after 4.8 didn't pan out. I re-imaged my machine (ghost) back to the 3.9 config. uninstalled all UA drivers, then installed 4.6 and added the registry key. UA support emailed today with the standard "move the cards in the slots" which may be valid, except i moved them alot to get 3.9 to work, and 3.9 works great.

UA said update audio and video drivers which I did (Layla 7.03) and tried ASIO drivers, set XP for best performance, background priority, etc. All the stuff you used to have to do to avoid dropouts. I'm looking at the PCI latency utility, and I have an Nvidia Nforce based chipset and I don't see a video entry (it's on IRQ 18) but the Layla is set for 192 and the 2 UAD1s are 240. Wonder if i should increse the layla to 240 or back thre UAD1s to 192. I just tried setting the Layla to 240 and that didn't seem to do it. Oh oh.... wait, the 3.6 install re-wrote the reg key. Gues I'll modify and try a reboot. Thanks for all

Update.... unfortunately, no luck with Turbo DMA Disable. Still get some big pops, but maybe a few less running version 4.8.

It seems like I can't get UA to really say why 4.8 needs all these tweaks, and 3.9 does not. They seem to evade the issue that 3.9 works and 4.8 needs all these tweaks. If you add up all the options they say to try, there are about 3000 possible combinations of buffer settings driver types, various latency settings, etc.

I don't have time, and 3.9 just works. Not sure I want to completely reconfigure my system to get the 1073 I paid for to work. It's my own fault for not trying the demo, but the VST adaptor crashed every time I scanned. I finally figured out a workaround to that myself, and the scans failed under 4.8 also as soon as an expired demo was scanned.

The new version 4.9 is on the way..UA has hinted that I wait and try it.

Gotta go do my real job now
