Using a plugin for pre-processing

This is probably a stupid question but here goes. I am an audiobook narrator. I was always under the impression that when using a software plugin you could have it active while recording so you could hear how it would affect your audio, but the processing is only done in post. Is that correct? For example, I was using a symetrix for my expander, compresser, etc. The processing was happening prior to the recording hitting the DAW. But when I don't use the symetrix or whatever hardware preamp, I am under the impression that the software plugins only work in post once they are applied. My husband and I are having quite a go on this.

I just got the townsend mic and have been using the 87vintage modeling or plugin, but just because it is on while I am recording, that doesn't mean anything is actually happening to the audio. I apply it at the end for it to take effect. Am I wrong on this? I am looking at getting the Apollo interface. I like using an expander pre-processing. Can the Apollo do this?

Sorry for the long explanation but I can't find this answer anywhere. Thanks for your help.

Yeah, Apollo“s can do this. And you will benefit from its feature to just listen to /monitoring your effect plugins like compressors or equalizers without actually record them on your tracks.
They have an option to switch either monitoring or recording your plugin effects.

Thanks so much. I appreciate the response. Most plugins can't though, is that correct? I can't let my husband win the whole thing :)

Actually, when you look at the UA catalog… most can, sorry this one goes to your husband :)
As long as it is an UAD plugin. They are designed for real time processing on an Apollo interface (only).
UADX (so called ‚native‘) plugins ( like as in the Spark subscription plan) cannot.

It sounds a bit complicated, and it probably is for newcomers.
I would like to leave it to the marketing department to explain this in detail. ;)

Awesome. Thank you again. You're right, it is hard to grasp that a software plugin can be used pre-processing. Every plugin I've had in the past (not UAD and not Apollo) had to be applied in post. I look forward to hearing from marketing.

If you are doing audio books there are some interesting plugins for real-time processing in the UA catalog. Additionally to the classics that come with the Apollo, I’d recommend checking out the C-Vox Plugin. It allows to kill room and environment noise while recording. That is especially useful if you don’t have a super treated room.

Maybe Drew @UniversalAudio - who is the marketing guy here - can add some more.
