I've just finished this album and am wondering what some opinions might be on some of this material. Does it sound Modern and yet some old school feel? I'm interested in any opinions you might have.
Just follow the link and choose any or all of the three songs.
Thanks for listening.

Nice tracks, not big though.

Study some Natalie Cole. (The one with her fathers remakes)

Piano on Embraceable is not as big as it should be. Drums kind of narrow, etc....

I Love old school jazz/big Band and there was always a nice bigness to the recordings of those days and Natalie Cole's album is one of the BEST recordings of that music style modernized. ;)

And when Rest of band comes in I dont feel the transition and it should escalate :) (Yah dig???)

Withcraft is HOT but way tooooooo Small. :) Got a little Sinatra in your voice huh???

Same with Thrill. Nice production but the mixes rob the tracks of their beauty.

Hi,
Thanks for the input. I had kept the drums fairly narrow and placed instruments, like horns and such pretty much panned to one side of the mix - mainly because the client wanted it to reflect something more narrow -- more like a live situation, where things aren't panned out as much, hope that makes sense. These are old school guys and I don't know if they'd really dig me mixing things up a bit as I think they were going for more like a 40's or 50's sound...
What would you suggest? I have no problems doing some things to the mixes, just don't know if they'll like them or not. I was definitely not trying to mix it like a modern pop or rock record.

Thanks

Hello:

I just wanted to pass along a little commentary. I thought that the instruments lacked presence as if you were imitating the recordings of yesteryear when there was one mike for the entire orchestra.

The lack of multiple tracks like we have today meant they could not record bass and drums, and certainly not a particular drum like the bass drum, on separate tracks.

That ability to amplify certain sounds and record certain sounds for placement in the mix pretty much defines a modern sound.

In my humble opinion, the instruments need more presence, more sound and the bass and drums need to sound like modern instruments.

The only other thing is that I thought the vocal was a bit too much out front but I guess that is part of the same comment.
