Which is the best UAD plug for compressing vocals, and what setting would you recommend..?
For either very soft country folk crooning on one side and hard rapping on the either

LA2A in compression mode!!! That will sound best with MOST everything!!!

If you need more control and more compression, try LA2A in compression mode, followed byu another LA2A in limit mode.

If you want a HARD compressed sound, try the 1176LN in all-buttons-in mode... adjust the input level unti lyou get the amount of compression you want, then adjust the attack and release to what sounds best for the singer and song.

For the best of both worlds...
Use the LA2A in compress mode, followed by the 1176LN in all-buttons-in mode or ratio 20:1

Since i moved to a house, with a dedicated recording room ( :D ), i've noticed that the fairchild sounds extremely musical to my ears!

the \"bass roll-off\" is particularly suited for vocals (as well as guitars) and the sound you get out of it can be mixed extremely high in the mix.

i've always been a fan of the tom-petty-1176-in-your-face-vocal-sound and nowadays i find myself reaching for the fairchild to do this.
to much success!
minus the 300hz boost as well as the noise the 1176 brings at those extreme compression levels.

now to the nerd part of the 670..:
the \"threshold\" as well as the \"DC bias\" affects the level of compression. i generally turn the DC bias fully clockwize, turn the threshold knob until the meter shows - 3-6 db, then i adjust the DC bias CCW to taste.
maybe i raise the threshold level after trimming the DC bias.
time constant 1 or 6.

result: smOOOth, in yer face vocal sound.
