Vocal Recording using L22, Sphere and UA Console Recording Front Only

Hi UAD Forum Members,

I am currently doing a vocal project, and I discovered anything I am recording through UA Console, Sphere running in Console using L22 to Logic Pro, is showing the same volume level of the front and rear of the L22.

Please see below -
  1. In Sphere, it correctly shows that the front has a higher volume level and the rear has less than the front.
  2. But in the UA Console Master volume, the levels L and R show the same. Even the channel (1/2) volume shows the same volume.

Logic Pro Session:
  1. After I recorded the signal in Logic from the Console, the audio levels for both channels (L & R) looked exactly like each other. It seems only the Front signal is being sent out from the Console.

Recording without Sphere in the Console shows the correct level from L22 -

Then I recorded in Logic Pro and Logic track is showing the correct levels -

I tried it with Bill Putnam - Sphere plugin, and the result is the same as I mentioned above.

Is there a setup or changes I need to make in UA Console to ensure the outgoing signal to DAWs is correct (Front having higher and Rear having lower volume)?

I am using Apollo X6.

Please help.

This is all normal and expected.

The output of the plugin is "dual mono". You've got it set to Rec not Mon so L and R should be the same.

When set to Mon, left will be higher.

Or am I missing something?

As Drew mentioned, if you use the Sphere plugin in Console and set to Rec, both outputs will be the same. That is not the case with Sphere 180 plugin, as that's intended to be stereo. Think of it this way: if you're modeling a mono mic, that will output a mono signal.

Hi Drew,

It's an honor to get a reply from you.

I am recording the signal coming from the UA Console. That is why the Mode is in Rec, not Mon. I have linked Channels 1 and 2 (Preamps) and added the Neve Preamp in the Unison slot. Added the Sphere plugin in the Inserts.

When I sing through L22, the Sphere shows the correct levels - The left being higher (Front) and the right lower (Rear). However, the channel output shows the same volume and seems to take only the Front one.

The same result is seen when the signal is recorded in Logic.

Without the Sphere plugin, if I use L22, both Console and Logic show the correct volume level.

Hi Naweed,
Happy to help!

As noted, this is working as designed. With the plugin inserted, the two capsules are "merged" into 1 signal that is fed to both outs.

Thanks, Matt, for your reply. So instead of REC mode, while tracking in UA Console, should I be using MON mode? Then, after recording, I can use the Sphere in Logic to try out other Mics.

Yes, if that is the goal. Set it to Mon.

Check out this cool workflow I showed a few years ago.

Thank you, Drew, and Matt, for your prompt answer and for troubleshooting my issue.

I just tried recording in MON mode, and the recording in Logic produced the desired result. I can now use all three of my Sphere plugins post-tracking and select the best mic and setup for the next stage.
