VST 3.0

Looks like Nuendo 4.0 will be out early October (it's already on their website and forum).

According to the documentation, it is not recommended to use plugins of a VST spec older than version 2.4
...However, all UAD plugins are currently using VST spec version 2.2!!!
OUCH!

VST 3.0 FULLY supports side-chaining, better performance, better routing, dynamic routing, and much more! We should urge UA to upgrade all their plugins for VST spec 3.0 imediately!

The VST3 SDK is already 6 months late being released.
Why, I have no idea at all.
Personally, I have been looking forward to Multichannel versions of the UAD plugs for a long time now - but I wonder what the DSP hit will be?

Anyway over time all plugins will be released in vst3 standard except very old ones that are not supported anymore.
Don't get fussed by Steinberg's recommendation, they surely have to keep compatibility for vst 2.x plugs for quite a while, it would be extremely audacious and even more user offending than dropping DX from C4/N4. UAD plugs work in Cubase 4 as well as under SX3.

Cubase 4 is the same - it only supports VST 2.4 or later - and the UAD plugs run fine for me on my Intel Mac.

So I'm not sure why it would be different for Nuendo 4?

I run USB on C4. I think it´s VST 1.0 or something.
Waves is already working on the VST3 versions of their plugs. Steinberg sent beta versions of the SDK to major devs.

Totally agree.

But also looking at this the other way round, UAD cannot drop support for VST2, as there are many users (myself included) who haven't upgraded to C4.

Updating the UAD-plugins to VST3.0 would be awesome in terms of performance too: VST3.0-compatible plugins only use up CPU when there is actually a signal/sound coming through!

So in that sense it would make our lives somewhat easier in terms of DSP-load :)

not to disappoint you, but logic does this for ages, and it doesn't help reduce the load on the uad-card because the plug stays loaded there. Next to that the plugins de-activate and re-activate a lot more. That will also tax the pc-cpu.

With uad there's one secure way to save dsp: use automation to bypass the plug on the plug itself when it's not needed. This will free up some resources and you don't have to wait for vst3. Just remember to start with at least some plugs bypassed & that it has no use if at some point in the arrangement all plugs are used at the same time
