What about a UAD-4 expansion rack like this?

This is just a simulation, but I shurely want to see something like this soon...

Hey guys, don't freak out, I just did this 3D pic to give and idea. It is not real, yet!

- 4 UAD-1 card expansion rack
- PCI, PCIe, Firewire, insert whatever you like here
- Card status on front panel

Just deaming.

Perhaps I neet to put some ventilation grids on the front panel, humm...

could you redo a picture saying \"8\"?

We can already have 4 in a magma so it's close... But 8... that would be great!

For a reasonable price, I would buy it immediately. Well, I don't need it right now, as I still have a board with PCI slots, but I have some space left in my rack, and I would love to have it there... ...looks great!

Another versions silverfaced:

UAD-4 (Including performance meters)

And the Big Brother:

UAD-8 (Deja vu?)

It would be cool to plug in this racks into the back of the new PCIe card. That way the actual customers (we) could integrate our \"old\" cards into the newcomming one.

UAD-8!!! That has my vote 8) 8) 8) I'd definately buy one if the price was anywhere near reasonable!! Meters are not all that necessary, but would be cool ;) In fact I could live with nothing but a power light if it was too much to put meters on it.
The only thing keeping me from adding 2 more cards right now is the fact that PCI is going the way of the dinorsaurs very fast!! I know, magma but that's the price of another card if you get it used. And new they are rediculious!!and it is still PCI based! But $500 to $800 or so for something made for the UAD-1 card with options to go either PCI, PCIe, or fire wire would make me feel all warm and fuzzy again. I LOVE these cards (have 2) but I will not buy another until I can see clearly an answer to this delema.

Owning 3 cards I'm also waiting to buy another card until we can get the whole picture about this. The bad thing is that this problem is stopping me from update my P4 2.4Mhz to a new Dual Opteron system, just because I don't like the Magma solution, those expansion racks are far to noisy.

Thats a beautiful design for the proprietary UA PCI chassis. It should connect to PCs like explained here.

Why stop at 8? MORE I SAY!

:D
Silliness aside, I like the idea. Magma racks are a somewhat inelegant solution, I feel.

That's great, but I'd go for a Firewire or USB solution first - UAD should look to the future. I have two UAD's plus a powercore, and finding a motherboard to accommodate all of those is getting very difficult.

PCIe DSP!

PCIe & Expresscard are the way forward for DSP expansion and there will likely be a single cable replacement for firewire too. Backed by Intel and already in the new MacBook Pro's and forthcoming desktop Mac/Intel machines...

http://www.pcisig.com/specifications/pciexpress/

For those that have ever tried Powercore Firewire, you will know... forget about running 8 UAD's over firewire.

PCIe x1 has 500 MB/s bandwidth
FW400 only has 40 MB/s (10-bit word)
FW800 has 80 MB/s (10-bit word)

The most basic PCIe implementation has over 10x the bandwidth.

If you want to run lots of audio channels, lots of plug instances and high sample rates, you need lots of fast bandwidth that is not sharing with your audio interface or hard drives!

PCIe offer per lane bandwidth so theoretically you could run a helluva lot of UAD processors in the future and the same drivers could run PCI & PCIe cards on a mixed-interface system.

So...it must be just a matter of time...and waiting..waiting...waiting...patiently...hoping...

mBlaze, that's interesting about the throughput of firewire vs PCIe - I didn't know that. Pony, thanks for the input - much appreciated. Now, back to wanking.

What everyone keeps forgeting is that Firewire is MORE than enough!

For example...

The Powercore can run more plugins than the UAD-1
The Powercore can run over firewire
You can use 4 Powercores on the same firewire bus (and is being expanded to more!)
The Powercore runs at half the latency of the UAD-1
The Powercore is only Firewire 400, Firewire 800 would be twice as fast!
SSL is now selling a firewire DSP unit
Focusrite is now selling a firewire DSP unit
Most of us have no PCIe slots!
New motherboards have less and less slots!
EVERYTHING IS GOING EXTERNAL (not cards)!

\"The Powercore can run more plugins than the UAD-1\"

im with you on everything else, but youve got me boggled with that one, where are these specs coming from? did those old motorolas suddenly get more powerful or 4x as fast or something? how are they making up the big difference in dsp capacity and where the heck are these specs id LOVE to read em!!
