Where's My Freaking Space Echo?

Hey...

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, but does anyone have an ETA on the RE-501 Space Echo plug? I think I'd heard that it was due before the end of the year, but now it's pushed back to early 2006. Is that the case?

I can't wait! The Roland emulations are great so far. LOVE the CE-1 and DD.

Dig that.

The Space Echo was the ONE Roland plug I was gonna buy. I was actually gonna blow off the other two. CURSE UA's MARKETING GENIUS!

I'm curious to see if UA incorporates any of the quirkiness of aging tape, pinch rollers, etc. into the plug-in. A perfectly working Space Echo is a great thing, of course, but a lot of character comes out when the thing isn't working perfectly. I know chaos is impossible to program, but it would be nice if, 1) I was able to get a somewhat random warble from the tape delay and, 2) I could specify whether I want to emulate new tape or worn out tape.

Maybe I'm asking too much. I'm just really looking forward to the release of this plug-in. Whatever it is, I'm sure it's gonna be cool.

My guess is that all the roland plugins have been ready for a long time and they're giving us 1 by 1 just because they want us to buy them all 1 at a time. That's marketing strategy. They know that we want new plugins and if they gave all 3 at the same time, maybe 50% of us would buy the space echo, 30% the dimension d and maybe 5% the boss chorus. Now they started with the boss and some people just couldn't wait for the dimension d and space echo and still wanted a new plugin so they bought the boss. Now the same with dimension d and finally space echo. This way UA gets more money. I can see that TC has quite opposite way to do things. They don't tell what plugins are coming but they just suddenly introduce 2 or more new plugins for powercore and they're usually shipping in 2 weeks.

FSD,

You could maybe make that argument regarding the 2 chorus units , but a delay is a completely different effect. I would seriously doubt there is a single person out there who \"resorted\" to buying the CE1 or DD because Space Echo isn't available.

So will there be a new batch of Roland plugs after Space Echo? Jet Phaser maybe? [-o<

Oh i have no doubt that its nowhere near ready.

This is tape, people, we need not be reminded that noone has even come remotely close yet.

Truly i feel this is the biggest challenge UA has taken on so far.

Once they achieve plausible tape emulation for the space echo perhaps they will refine it for a dedicated tape sim plugin. thats what i am hoping.

its smackdown, UA vs. Tape.

I really hope it's before Christmas.
I've got several tracks parked awaiting the RE-201.

I'm a product designer and if the emulation sounds 'right' I'm going to design and make a dedicated hardware controller for it...

...but at a practical level, where do you see it's biggest application?

Not being too much of a wet blanket, but whilst lots of people seem to be getting over-enthused about it's arrival, I can't see where I'd really benefit from adding that kind of effect into a mix.

Unless it's because my mixes are far too congested already, and I'm always fighting to thin them out?!

Which is where surround capability would be worth it's weight in gold....

Tape echo is great to \"thicken up\" guitar and vocal tracks, as well as the obvious guitar tracks. (Think U2, Police, etc..........) A lot of times it was used on some percussion (bells, tamborines, hihat, etc...) to help out the rhythm section. This is probably more for composers than producers.
I compose with the delay plugined in and running. It's the one effect that you can't work out all the guitar parts on an accoustic and say hmm. I'll use this guitar/footpedal/amp combo for track 1 and that guitar/footpedal/amp for track 2 and delay track 3.....it just doesn't work that way (usually).

As far as wanting the quirkyness of the old crappy worn out machines and tape , FORGET IT.

I am continuosly feeding my Fulltone Tube Tape Echo (boutique echo plex) with tape cartridges, cleaning and demagnitizing tape heads (remember doing that) to keep the unit in tip top condition.

I think a plug in would be nice to really get another flavor of reverb or space. Hey we'll have space and dimension huh?

Depends of course on the kind of music you produce.

For true dub effects the Space Echo ought to be setup on a bus and elements of the mix 'sent' to it in varying ammounts at various times. This of course can be achieved by automating the sends. However some of the more sublime applications of the RE-201 have been when the mixing engineer/producer (e.g. King Tubby or Scientist) 'played' the RE-201 live.

This is why I'd like a faithful controller for it...

.
How about Phoenix Lab's Cranesong (is that what its called?). Has anyone heard this thing? It boasts three types of tape saturation. I believe it's for TDM only, which puts it out of my league. Actually most VST plugins are out of my league. No bread here...

From the AES newsletter:

Roland RE-201 Space Echo
Tape Echo & Spring Reverb

In 1973, Roland created the Space Echo system that utilized multiple play heads to create warm, highly adjustable echo effects, which added wonderful tape character and chaos to performances and recordings. The Space Echo can be heard on numerous recordings, from 70’s space rock like Pink Floyd and David Bowie, to countless Reggae and Dub albums, to more recent electronic and electronic-crossover bands like Portishead and Radiohead. Universal Audio has been entrusted by Roland to re-create the highly beloved RE-201 unit, considered the best of the Space Echo line. Our team spent over a year developing our RE-201 Space Echo, which truly captures the physical behaviour of this complex device “warts and all”, down to the distortion, wow and flutter, pitch shifting, and warmth that tape based delays are famous for; but our plug-in goes even further, capturing the complex self-oscillation that makes the Space Echo more than an effect, but a unique instrument unto itself.

UA’s RE-201 Space Echo faithfully retains all the controls and features of the original, such as the Mode Selector for various head combinations, Repeat Rate for fine timing control, and Intensity which sets repeat count and allows the unit achieve self-oscillation. The all-important Echo/Normal “Dub” switch is retained for muting, as well as the tone controls. Last but certainly not least, the atmospheric shimmer of the Space Echo’s spring reverb is faithfully captured, putting this fantastic plug-in on par with the original unit as a tool of infinite creativity. Our emulation also adds substantial “digital only” features like host Tempo Sync, Output Volume, Echo and Reverb Pan, plus a clever Tape Select switch which allows the user to select between three distinct grades of tape loop quality; new, used and distressed.

• Meticulous model of original Roland RE-201 Space Echo
• Tape echo modeling, complete with saturation, wow & flutter, and splice
• Incredible tape oscillation effects and spring reverb emulation
• Entrusted by Roland for accurate analog modeling
• Original features like Mode Selector, Intensity and “Dub” switch
• Digital only features like tempo sync, effects pan, and tape select
• Tape loops modeled from original Roland tape loops
• User selectable tape loops from New to Distressed
• Spring modeled from the commonly updated “Accutronics” tank
